For the 18th year running the FINA World Championships for aquatic sports will be held in Gwangju, South Korea. FINA standing for the global governing body of aquatics, ‘Federation Internationale de Natation’, that was founded in 1908. However, the World Championships were not started until later on in 1973.

The start and end date for the Gwangju-hosted World Championship will be from July 12th up until July 28th, 2019 (over a 17-day period). There are seven venues in total; five being official venues for the competitions, and two for training purposes. To see these venues in greater detail, all the information is listed on the official Gwangju 2019 FINA World Championships website. The link for which has been included at the end of the article.

The following aquatic sport categories that will be judged are: Swimming, Diving, Water Polo, Artistic Swimming, Open Water and High Diving.

There is more information regarding each of the categories such as, an introduction to the sport, what competitions will be held for each gender, mixed and team, which venue it will be held at, and a brief description of the rules.

The official Gwangju 2019 FINA website outlines in the spectator guide tab all the need to know details for those planning to watch the competitions. There is information on how to reach Gwangju from different airports, how to reach Yeosu, and for anyone already in the country for travel there is the information for domestic travellers. It also gives recommendations on where to stay in Gwangju depending on the venue, and the category of competition. Finally, there are some recommended foods that are popular to eat during sports competitions or special to the region such as ‘galbi’, grilled meat, and ‘chi-maek’, fried chicken and beer combination.

Gwangju City as well as the Organizing Committee of the 18th FINA World Championships Gwangju are working hard for a positive and successful championship. For that success they have organized a special cultural event.
