Thailand’s growing appetite for performance-led fitness may be outpacing the recovery habits needed to sustain it, according to new research from Virgin Active Thailand. Released alongside the local launch of its global Everything You Need Is Inside campaign, the nationwide study of 1,000 consumers in Thailand* found that while 87% consider rest and recovery important to their overall health and wellbeing, 53% are still getting less recovery than they need.

Performance fitness is becoming increasingly visible across Thailand. In August 2026, more than 20,000 athletes from over 60 countries competed at HYROX Bangkok, making it the largest HYROX event staged in Asia, according to organisers**. Garmin Connect data also found that recorded strength-training activity among Thai users grew by 30% in 2025***, overtaking cycling to become the country’s third most popular activity on the platform.

Yet as more people embrace ambitious physical goals, their recovery habits don’t always keep pace. This gap affects far more than athletic performance: over the past six months, 66% of respondents experienced fatigue, 57% stress, 53% poor sleep, and 41% prolonged muscle soreness, while 39% reported burnout linked to work, training, or wider lifestyle pressures.

Joanne Lim, Head of Marketing, Member Experience and Engagement, Southeast Asia at Virgin Active, said: “It is encouraging to see more people setting ambitious fitness goals and discovering what their bodies are capable of. But sustainable performance is not built through training alone. Our research shows that while most people in Thailand recognise the importance of recovery, more than half say they are not getting enough.

“Recovery should not be seen as time away from training. It is an essential part of optimal performance, helping people train consistently, reduce the risk of setbacks and sustain progress. Our wellness needs can also change from one day to the next. Sometimes we need challenge and intensity; on other days, we may benefit more from mobility, mindfulness or rest. That’s the thinking behind Virgin Active’s latest global campaign, Everything You Need Is Inside, which champions a more complete and flexible approach to wellbeing.”

Virgin Active’s findings also point to a more personalised view of wellbeing. 43% of respondents said what they need can vary by day or circumstance., highlighting the importance of having flexibility to respond to how they feel and what they want to achieve.

Consumers are increasingly looking for support across this broader spectrum. While 40% of respondents are interested in recovery programmes, 59% value quiet relaxation spaces, 37% physical recovery treatments and 26% mindfulness or breathwork. Taken together, the findings point to growing demand for wellness environments that support people before, during and after training, rather than only while they exercise.

Within Virgin Active’s Social Wellness Club model, performance options such as HYROX preparation, Reformer Pilates and strength conditioning sit alongside cold plunges, steam rooms, hydrotherapy pools, Hyperice massage and compression therapy, slow-flow yoga, breathwork and dedicated stretching spaces. This breadth reflects the campaign’s central idea: wellbeing is not one-dimensional, and people should have the freedom to choose what they need in the moment.
