Some restaurants offer a view, some have history, and some let the address do half the talking.
Then there is Bennelong.
For the inaugural GTM Restaurant of the Week, we could hardly begin somewhere timid. Instead, we are heading beneath the unmistakable sails of the Sydney Opera House, where contemporary Australian dining meets one of the world’s great pieces of architecture.
Welcome to Bennelong, where Sydney doesn’t merely provide the backdrop. It practically joins you for dinner.
Dining beneath Sydney’s famous sails
Bennelong sits within the Sydney Opera House at Bennelong Point, giving it something even the finest restaurant designer would struggle to manufacture: an extraordinary sense of place.
For visitors arriving through Circular Quay, the journey becomes part of the occasion. Ferries cross the harbour, the Sydney Harbour Bridge dominates one side of the panorama, and Jørn Utzon’s celebrated Opera House sails rise ahead.
The Sydney Opera House features Bennelong, its award-winning fine-dining restaurant. Dinner reservations are available seven days a week, while lunch is offered from Friday to Sunday.
For international travellers, it offers an appealing way to combine two key parts of a Sydney visit: one of Australia’s most recognisable landmarks and contemporary Australian dining.
Not a bad double act.
Peter Gilmore puts Australia on the plate
One of Australia’s most celebrated chefs, Peter Gilmore, leads Bennelong.
Australian produce and wine are central to the restaurant’s approach, with its menu designed around the flavour, diversity and quality of produce sourced from farmers, fishers, breeders and providores around the country.
Rather than attempting to transport diners somewhere else, Bennelong’s great advantage is that it knows precisely where it is.
Its food, wine, architecture and harbour setting combine to create an experience firmly anchored in Australia.
The current dining formats include a three-course choice menu in the Restaurant, à la carte dining at The Counter, a two-course House Lunch offered alongside the regular lunch menu from Friday to Sunday, and food and cocktails in Bennelong Bar. Groups of eight or more dining in the Restaurant use a dedicated three-course group menu.
Menus are seasonal and can change, so GTM recommends checking Bennelong’s official website for the latest dishes and pricing before visiting.
Five ways to experience Bennelong
Bennelong spans three levels of the Sydney Opera House and incorporates five distinct areas: the Main Dining Room, The Counter, The Table, Dress Circle and Bennelong Bar.
The Main Dining Room occupies the ground level, where guests enjoy a three-course menu with sweeping views towards Circular Quay.
One level above is The Counter, featuring side-by-side high seating at a brass counter overlooking the Main Dining Room. It offers an à la carte alternative for diners who prefer to choose their own progression through Bennelong’s seasonal dishes.
The same level contains The Table, a semi-private dining space designed for small groups.
Upstairs, the Dress Circle extends the main restaurant experience, with views towards the Opera House sails and Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Then there is Bennelong Bar.
For travellers who want to experience the surroundings without committing to the full restaurant menu, the bar offers drinks, cocktails, and elevated snacks. Reservations are available, while space is also retained for walk-in guests, subject to availability.
It could prove particularly useful for visitors attending an Opera House performance or those who simply believe a Sydney evening occasionally deserves a proper cocktail.
Before the curtain rises
Combining Bennelong with a Sydney Opera House performance sounds effortless, but timing matters.
The Sydney Opera House advises pre-theatre diners to allow at least one hour and 45 minutes to enjoy Bennelong’s three-course menu before attending a performance.
It is sensible advice.
This is not the evening to discover, with eight minutes until curtain-up, that dessert has only just left the kitchen.
When making a reservation, pre-theatre diners should tell Bennelong which performance they are attending. The restaurant advises that its team can help keep the dining experience on schedule.
Who should consider Bennelong?
For an overseas visitor making a first trip to Sydney, Bennelong has obvious appeal.
A traveller can explore Circular Quay, walk around the Opera House precinct, enjoy contemporary Australian dining and perhaps attend a performance all within one of Sydney’s most celebrated locations.
It should also interest couples celebrating a special occasion, luxury travellers, food-focused visitors, and business travellers wanting to entertain clients somewhere unmistakably Sydney.
For travel advisors, that combination is particularly useful.
Recommending restaurants to clients in another city can be surprisingly difficult. Location, transport, dietary requirements, accessibility, atmosphere and booking arrangements can matter almost as much as the menu.
Bennelong’s position inside the Sydney Opera House makes at least one part remarkably straightforward.
Nobody is going to spend 20 minutes wandering Sydney asking where someone has hidden the Opera House.
GTM TIP: Make Bennelong part of the evening
Don’t think of Bennelong simply as somewhere to eat. Build a Sydney evening around it.
Arrive at Circular Quay with time to spare, walk along the harbour foreshore and enjoy the Opera House precinct before your reservation.
The Opera House advises visitors that the walk from Circular Quay takes about seven to 10 minutes, and the precinct is easily reached by train, ferry, light rail, bus, bicycle, car, or on foot.
Travellers attending a performance should reserve with their curtain time firmly in mind. Those without theatre tickets can simply make dinner the evening’s main event.
Restaurant reservations are essential, according to the Sydney Opera House, and can be made directly with Bennelong.
Accessibility
Travellers with mobility requirements should discuss their needs with Bennelong when booking.
The Restaurant and City Circle areas on the lower level are wheelchair accessible through the main entrance. Access to Bennelong Bar and Dress Circle on the upper level can be arranged in advance through the reservations team using the Joan Sutherland Theatre lifts and Upper Podium.
However, The Table and The Counter on the middle level are not wheelchair accessible.
Bennelong encourages guests with accessibility requirements to contact its reservations team before visiting so they can make appropriate arrangements.
Opening hours
At the time of publication, lunch reservations are available Friday to Sunday from noon to 2 pm.
Dinner reservations operate Sunday to Thursday from 5.30 pm to 8.45 pm, extending to 9.15 pm on Friday and Saturday.
Bennelong Bar operates Monday to Thursday from 5.30 pm until late and Friday to Sunday from noon until late. Reservations are available, with space retained for walk-ins subject to availability.
Opening hours, menus and restaurant policies can change, so travellers should check directly with Bennelong before visiting.
What will it cost?
Bennelong sits firmly in Sydney’s premium/fine-dining category.
Rather than publishing a fixed price that may become obsolete as seasonal menus change, GTM recommends checking the restaurant’s current menu when booking.
Travellers should also note several booking conditions. Bennelong currently requires credit card details to secure reservations. A 10 per cent surcharge applies to food and beverage prices on Sundays and 15 per cent on public holidays, while card payments attract a variable surcharge. Cancellation and no-show charges may also apply.
These are precisely the details worth checking before making a reservation, particularly when booking for clients.
GTM Restaurant of the Week
So why begin our new international restaurant series here?
Because GTM Restaurant of the Week isn’t intended merely to identify expensive dining rooms or compile another list of fashionable places to eat.
We want to find restaurants that add something memorable to the journey.
Sometimes that will mean a celebrated fine-dining restaurant. Other weeks, it could be a neighbourhood institution, a brilliant seafood restaurant, an exceptional Asian dining room, or an inexpensive local favourite that travellers might otherwise walk straight past.
Bennelong provides an appropriately Australian opening chapter.
Its attraction isn’t simply what’s on the plate. It is the combination of food, architecture, harbour, history and location.
Great restaurant experiences have always involved considerably more than dinner. There is the welcome, the room, the wine, the company, the service and that difficult-to-define feeling that you could only be dining in one particular place.
Bennelong certainly has geography on its side.
You could reproduce a dish elsewhere. You could pour excellent Australian wine elsewhere. You could even employ another very talented chef.
But try moving the Sydney Opera House.
For travellers searching for a dining experience intrinsically connected with Sydney, Bennelong deserves a place on the consideration list.
And that seems an appropriately grand spot for GTM Restaurant of the Week to begin.
