The Capricorn Coast Region may be best known for its sparkling coastline, ancient caves, island escapes and easy access to the Southern Great Barrier Reef, but some of its most extraordinary natural treasures are found beneath the forest canopy, clinging to limestone walls and flourishing across vast coastal wetlands.
From the rainforest-edged creeks of Byfield to the dry vine forests surrounding Rockhampton and the internationally significant wetlands north of Yeppoon, the region supports an exceptional variety of plant life. Some species are found within an incredibly limited range, while others have adapted to survive in remarkably specialised environments.
Together, they reveal a landscape that is as ecologically diverse as it is beautiful.

Livingstone Shire’s biodiversity snapshot records 2,311 species across its terrestrial plants, aquatic plants, fungi, algae and slime mould groups. This includes 2,129 terrestrial plant species, 111 fungi species, 40 aquatic plant species and 30 algae species.
Even more remarkably, 11 plant species are endemic to Livingstone Shire, meaning they are naturally found nowhere else.
The Byfield Fern – Bowenia serrulata
One of the region’s most distinctive plants is the Byfield fern, or Bowenia serrulata.
Despite its name and delicate, fern-like fronds, the Byfield fern is not actually a fern. It is a cycad – part of an ancient group of non-flowering plants that existed long before many of the plants we recognise today. Its glossy green fronds emerge from an underground stem, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the shaded forest floor.
The species is endemic to the Byfield area, making this pocket of the Capricorn Coast its exclusive natural home. Here, it grows among rainforest, open forest and creek environments within a landscape also known for towering eucalypts, ancient cycads, coastal heath and rugged sand dunes.
Visitors exploring Byfield National Park and State Forest may encounter these distinctive plants beside walking tracks and beneath the forest canopy. Their localised distribution makes every sighting a reminder of how special this environment is.

Byfield receives almost 700 millimetres more rainfall on average than Yeppoon, helping its granite hills support wetter rainforest vegetation and a remarkable diversity of plant life.
Tectaria devexa
North of Rockhampton, another remarkable fern has made its home in one of the region’s most unexpected environments.
The endangered Tectaria devexa grows at Capricorn Caves, where its small fronds emerge from thin pockets of soil along the limestone cave walls. To survive, the fern requires just the right combination of moisture and filtered sunlight, limiting it to sheltered sections of the cave system where these conditions occur naturally.
Its fragile habitat makes the species particularly vulnerable. Capricorn Caves has undertaken conservation and planting work to help protect and strengthen the local population, carefully establishing plants in suitable areas of the cave environment.
While the caves are celebrated for their dramatic chambers, ancient geology and wildlife, the presence of this endangered fern adds another layer to their natural story. It is a quiet survivor, demonstrating how even a small pocket of soil and light can support something extraordinarily precious.
Shoalwater and Corio Bays Area Ramsar site
North of Yeppoon lies one of Queensland’s largest and most ecologically rich coastal wetland systems: the Shoalwater and Corio Bays Area Ramsar site.
Listed as a Wetland of International Importance in 1996, the site covers more than 200,000 hectares and brings together an extraordinary mosaic of freshwater, marine, estuarine and intertidal environments. Its landscapes include mangrove forests, melaleuca woodlands, seagrass beds, freshwater lagoons, peat swamps, coastal dunes, tidal flats, saltmarsh and winding estuarine channels.
The wetlands sit within a climatic transition zone where tropical and subtropical species overlap. Combined with the area’s varied landforms and relatively undisturbed condition, this has created exceptional biodiversity. Around 908 plant species and subspecies have been recorded within the Ramsar site, along with eight species of seagrass and 13 species of mangrove.
Among its nationally threatened plants are the endangered lesser swamp orchid and the Byfield matchstick. The site’s freshwater peat swamps are also considered rare within the bioregion, adding to the ecological importance of this vast coastal landscape.
Much of the Shoalwater Bay component is managed for conservation and defence purposes and is not generally accessible to visitors. However, the southern Corio Bay section forms part of the broader Byfield landscape, where visitors can experience rainforest, wetlands, waterways and coastal environments while exploring designated recreation areas.

Byfield’s dunes are more than mountains of sand. Rainwater filters through them into a complex underground aquifer that helps sustain Waterpark Creek. In some areas, groundwater emerges as permanent freshwater springs or “sinkholes”, supporting lush rainforest communities including feather palm vine forest.
Plants shaped by ancient stone
Some of the region’s rarest plants have been shaped by the ground beneath them.
Stretching through areas including Marlborough, Kunwarara, Canoona, Bondoola and Cawarral, the region’s serpentine landscapes are formed from ancient, dark-green serpentinite rock. High levels of minerals such as nickel and chromium create challenging soil conditions in which only specially adapted plants can thrive.
These nationally rare landscapes support an extraordinary concentration of significant flora, including the Marlborough blue cycad, serpentine zamia and several species found nowhere else.

From dry rainforest to coastal heath
The region’s botanical diversity extends well beyond its headline species.
At Mount Archer National Park, overlooking Rockhampton, walking trails pass through lemon-scented gums, bloodwoods, forest she-oaks, dry rainforest and dense vine forest. Burdekin plum, tuckeroo trees and twisting vines thrive in the sheltered gullies, creating a dramatic contrast with the more open woodland found along the ridges.
Further north, remnant dry rainforest clings to the limestone karst of Mount Etna Caves National Park. These fragile plant communities have adapted to shallow soils, exposed rock and highly seasonal conditions, forming part of an intricate landscape of caves, limestone formations and sheltered forest pockets.
Closer to the coastline, vegetation changes again. Mangroves line tidal waterways, salt-tolerant plants occupy coastal flats, paperbarks gather around wetlands and heath communities spread across ancient dunes. Offshore, seagrasses continue the region’s botanical story beneath the water, providing important habitat and feeding grounds throughout the coastal environment.
Among the coast’s rarest plant communities is littoral rainforest, also known as coastal vine thicket or beach scrub. Found on both sand dunes and rocky headlands, this critically endangered ecological community provides habitat for threatened plants and animals while acting as a natural buffer against coastal wind and erosion.
Look closer on your next visit
The rare and special flora of the Capricorn Coast Region is not always immediately obvious. Sometimes it is a glossy cycad growing quietly beneath the Byfield canopy. Sometimes it is a tiny, endangered fern clinging to a limestone wall. Elsewhere, it forms an immense wetland landscape stretching from freshwater swamps to mangrove-lined bays and seagrass meadows.
Visitors can help protect these environments by remaining on marked tracks, leaving plants undisturbed, following park and tour guidelines and taking only photographs.
