Explora Journeys has taken delivery of EXPLORA III in Genoa, pushing the MSC Group’s fast-growing luxury brand to the halfway mark of its planned six-ship fleet.

The handover took place at Fincantieri’s Sestri Ponente shipyard on 23 July 2026. It was a fittingly Italian affair: senior executives, civic leaders, shipyard workers, national anthems, a change of flag and, naturally, a bottle sent briskly towards the hull. Subtle it was not. Nor should it have been.

EXPLORA III is the third vessel to enter service for the brand, following EXPLORA I and EXPLORA II. It also advances MSC Group’s investment of more than €3.5 billion in the six-ship program, with every vessel designed and built by Fincantieri in Italy.

For the travel trade, the delivery is more than a ceremonial exchange of paperwork and polished brass. It gives advisors another high-value product to sell in a luxury cruise market that increasingly favours space, privacy, longer stays and a less hurried style of exploration.

More room, almost the same guest count

The newcomer is 19.2 metres longer than her two sisters, yet carries only two additional suites.

EXPLORA III has 463 suites in total, including 313 Ocean Suites, 109 Penthouses and 39 Ocean Residences. That modest increase in inventory allows the extra length to be spent where affluent guests tend to notice it most: larger public areas, greater outdoor space and a stronger sense that one is not sharing breakfast with half of Europe.

Explora Journeys says the ship provides 19.5 square metres of public space per guest and almost one host for every guest. Those figures matter. At the rarefied end of cruising, luxury is no longer judged simply by marble, chandeliers or the number of ways a pillow may be folded. Space, service and silence have become the real currency.

Two Owner’s Residences now sit at the stern. The new residence on Deck 7 was designed by Patricia Urquiola and covers 280 square metres, including a 125-square-metre terrace.

It is the sort of accommodation that makes the phrase “cabin upgrade” sound rather underdressed.

Food, wellness and retail receive an upgrade

EXPLORA III introduces three new culinary concepts: The Cellar, The Chef’s Table and Shore Club on 11. They join returning venues including Sakura, Anthology, Fil Rouge, Med Yacht Club, Marble & Co. Grill and Emporium Marketplace.

The Cellar is aimed at guests who prefer their wine discussion to involve vintages, terroir and perhaps a discreetly ignored price list. The Chef’s Table offers a more intimate, presentation-led dining experience, while Shore Club on 11 brings refined all-day dining to the pool deck.

Ocean Wellness has also been reworked. Spa, wellness and fitness facilities are now brought together on Deck 5, while outdoor fitness, an expanded sports court and a longer running track cater to guests determined to earn dinner before ordering it.

Retail has been sharpened too, with Chopard making its onboard debut alongside Cartier. This may not improve anyone’s luggage allowance, but it should do wonders for the conversation at customs.

A carefully staged debut season

The ship began a one-off, five-night Mediterranean Prelude Journey from Genoa on 24 July. It calls at Marseille, Saint-Tropez, Villefranche-sur-Mer and Livorno before arriving in Civitavecchia on 29 July.

Tennis champion and Explora Journeys global brand ambassador Jannik Sinner joined the opening portion of the sailing, giving the new ship’s launch a dash of sporting glamour and no shortage of well-struck publicity.

Barcelona will host the official naming ceremony on 1 August 2026. Marine educator and conservationist Cristina Ozores is scheduled to officially name the vessel.

Maya Aponte performed the ribbon-cutting and bottle-breaking at the earlier Genoa delivery event. It is a distinction worth making amid the considerable champagne, flags and maritime tradition.

EXPLORA III will then depart Barcelona on 3 August for a seven-night Maiden Journey to Lisbon. Her inaugural program continues through Northern Europe, Iceland, Greenland, the Canadian Maritimes and New England, following a largely continuous route rather than repeating the same weekly circuit.

That itinerary strategy should appeal to experienced luxury travellers seeking slower, destination-rich journeys. It also gives travel advisors a stronger story than “same ship, same ports, different Saturday”.

Alaska follows in 2027, when Explora Journeys will make its debut in the region. The broader fleet expansion continues with EXPLORA IV and EXPLORA V due in 2027, followed by EXPLORA VI in 2028.

EXPLORA V is also scheduled to introduce the brand to Asia in 2028.

LNG capability brings opportunity — and scrutiny

EXPLORA III is the first LNG-capable ship in the Explora Journeys fleet. Her dual-fuel engines can operate on liquefied natural gas and are intended to support the future use of renewable alternatives such as bio-LNG and synthetic LNG as supply develops.

The ship can also connect to shore power where ports provide the infrastructure, allowing its engines to be switched off while berthed. That can reduce direct emissions and local air pollution in port.

Still, LNG is a transition technology rather than a magic green wand.

Its full climate performance depends on the fuel pathway, upstream leakage and the control of methane slip from engines. European and international regulators now account more closely for those lifecycle emissions.

The future value of EXPLORA III’s machinery will therefore depend not merely on being fuel-flexible, but on gaining reliable access to genuinely lower-carbon fuels.

A significant trade milestone

Anna Nash, President of Explora Journeys, said:

“Today marks another proud milestone for Explora Journeys as we officially welcome EXPLORA III into our growing fleet. With every new ship, we have the opportunity to listen, learn and refine, building on what our guests value most while remaining true to the vision that defines our brand. EXPLORA III represents the next step in our journey as we continue to redefine ocean travel through thoughtful innovation, exceptional design and the intuitive hospitality that sits at the heart of the Explora Journeys experience. As a privately owned, family-led business with deep maritime heritage, we remain committed to investing for the long term, always with our guests at the centre of every decision.”

That long-term investment is now visible in steel, glass and a great deal of Italian craftsmanship.

With three ships sailing and three more under construction, Explora Journeys is no longer merely introducing itself to luxury cruising. It is building scale, widening its geographic reach and asking the established operators to make room at the top table.

Judging by EXPLORA III, it has also brought its own chair.
