The aviation industry rarely changes its safety foundations overnight. Yet, if the signals emerging from Europe’s airports prove accurate, the year 2026 could bring one of the most significant technology shake-ups the sector has seen in decades.
According to Clinton Cardozo, CEO of aviation compliance technology firm OneReg, airports across Europe and potentially further afield are quietly preparing to replace ageing Safety Management Systems (SMS) that no longer meet modern operational and cybersecurity expectations.
The trend is still emerging, but the signs are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
Airport operators, regulators and safety teams are now issuing a growing number of tenders and requests for proposals as they seek to modernise the systems underpinning aviation safety oversight.
If the trajectory continues, the industry could soon see dozens, potentially hundreds, of airports simultaneously transitioning to new safety platforms in 2026.
That may sound like a routine technology upgrade. It isn’t.
In aviation, a Safety Management System sits at the very heart of airport operations. It is the infrastructure that tracks incidents, supports investigations, manages risk assessments, and provides the data that regulators rely upon to confirm that an airport is operating safely.
Replacing such a system is less like updating software and more like conducting open-heart surgery on the operational nervous system of an airport.
Cardozo says the warning signs are becoming increasingly visible.
“We’re seeing a noticeable uptick in airports approaching us because they suddenly need to replace their Safety Management System – often on much shorter timelines than expected,” Cardozo explained.
“While the reasons vary, the pattern is clear: more airports are finding themselves dependent on legacy safety management platforms that are reaching end of life or no longer meeting modern operational and cybersecurity expectations.”
The issue, according to industry insiders, is not merely ageing technology.
Many of the systems currently operating in airports were designed decades ago, long before cybersecurity threats became a defining risk for aviation infrastructure and well before the industry began demanding real-time operational intelligence.
Today’s airports are data-driven ecosystems that simultaneously manage millions of passengers, aircraft movements, ground operations, and regulatory reporting requirements. Safety platforms built for a slower, analogue era are struggling to keep pace.
That growing mismatch is now forcing airports to confront a difficult reality.
“For airports, replacing a safety management system is not a small lift,” Cardozo said.
“These platforms sit at the heart of safety oversight they underpin reporting, investigations, risk assessments, audits, and regulatory confidence. A transition affects every department, touches thousands of data points, and requires careful migration to avoid operational disruption.”
In other words, this is not a quick technology refresh. It is a complex operational transformation.
The pressure to modernise is also being driven by regulators and international aviation safety frameworks such as those established by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). ICAO’s guidance continues to emphasise data-driven safety oversight and integrated risk management across aviation operations.
Airports are therefore increasingly looking beyond simple replacements and instead reassessing their entire safety infrastructure.
Cardozo says many operators are no longer interested in patching together fragmented systems assembled through years of acquisitions and upgrades.
Instead, they are turning to cloud-native safety platforms that provide real-time visibility across airport operations, stronger cyber protection, and integrated reporting capabilities.
“This is creating a real moment of disruption across the industry,” Cardozo said.
“Airports that had planned incremental upgrades are now having to accelerate full system transitions, sometimes with only a few months’ notice.”
And the industry’s thinking appears to be shifting.
Rather than merely replacing outdated tools, airport leaders are beginning to view the process as a rare opportunity to rethink how safety oversight functions in the digital era.
Cardozo believes airports facing the challenge should treat the transition strategically.
“For any airport facing an unexpected safety management system transition in 2026, our advice is simple: treat this as a strategic opportunity, not just a technical swap,” he said.
“The right platform should reduce complexity, strengthen resilience, and give leaders clearer intelligence about emerging risks. Airports deserve systems that will serve them for the next decade, not just the next audit cycle.”
That sentiment reflects a broader truth about aviation.
Safety may be the industry’s most enduring principle, but the technology supporting it must evolve continuously.
If the early signals prove accurate, 2026 could mark the moment when airports worldwide finally retire yesterday’s legacy systems and step decisively into a new generation of digital safety oversight.
For an industry built on risk management and operational certainty, this transition is one few airports can afford to delay.
