Tourism Fiji, seizing the moment with style and sentiment, has launched a charming and cheeky new campaign dubbed “Wilson’s Happily Ever After.” It features a short film chronicling what Wilson’s life might have looked like since his on-screen separation from Tom Hanks and his tearful departure into the South Pacific.
The campaign is more than just a nod to nostalgia; it’s a celebration of joy, survival, and the sheer delight of finding happiness in unexpected places—namely, the island nation where the film was shot.
“Wilson’s story is one that has stuck with so many for 25 years,” says Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, speaking with the sort of gravitas usually reserved for lost monarchs or beloved soap characters. “He’s the volleyball that broke hearts around the world.”
And break hearts he did. If you’ve ever seen a grown man cry over inflated sports equipment, it was likely during that famous farewell scene as Wilson drifted away, becoming an unintentional maritime martyr for millions.
A Seaside Treasure Hunt
Now, the plucky little ball is literally rolling back into Aussie waters. On Thursday, 24 July, from 6:00 am AEST, three Wilsons will appear on the sands of Bondi Beach in New South Wales, St Kilda Beach in Victoria, and Main Beach on the Gold Coast, Queensland.
Each of these limited-edition volleyballs will feature a QR code. Scan it, and you could find yourself the lucky winner of a return trip to Wilson’s homeland: Fiji.
Imagine that—sunrise, a stroll on the beach, and a beachball that’s more than a beachball. He’s your ticket to palm trees, crystal-clear lagoons, and a few days off-grid in a place where happiness, as the Fijians say, “comes naturally.”
From Survivor to Sportsman
Tourism Fiji’s short video tribute paints a whimsical picture of Wilson’s life post-Hollywood. Not only did he survive the brutal sea, but he’s also reportedly made friends, resumed his athletic lifestyle, and—believe it or not—is playing volleyball again.
“He’s thriving,” Hill added, with tongue firmly in cheek. “The short video is a way of giving fans a little closure and celebrating the heart that makes Fiji so special.”

Can’t Get to the Beach? No Worries, Mate
There’s still hope for those of us not within cooee of the coast. Wilson’s Sporting Goods—the company that helped launch the icon into the pop-culture stratosphere—is also getting in on the action. Starting July 24, spend $250 online or in-store, and you’ll be automatically entered into the draw for a dreamy Fijian escape.
