Spread the love

Marriott International - Logo.In a move as bold as a well-pulled espresso and just as invigorating, Marriott International has peeled back the curtain on its latest act: Series by Marriott — a collection brand tailored for the midscale and upscale traveller who likes their comforts familiar but their stories local.

And where does this tale begin? India, of course, where the past and future hold hands like old mates over masala chai.

A Series of Fortunate Events

Marriott’s newest venture starts with a founding deal from the subcontinental playbook: a strategic partnership with Concept Hospitality Private Limited (CHPL), the eco-conscious minds behind India’s beloved Fern Hotels. If the name sounds leafy, that’s because it is. CHPL, steered by industry veteran Param Kannampilly, has been greening the Indian hospitality map since 1996.

Under the deal, CHPL’s flagship brands — The Fern, The Fern Residency and The Fern Habitat — will don the badge of Series by Marriott across India. But rest assured, they won’t lose their native charm. This isn’t a brand takeover — it’s a brand embrace. Marriott will make a small but symbolically rich equity investment in CHPL, marking its first such venture in the Indian market.

Currently, the Fern portfolio boasts 84 operational properties and another 31 warming up in the wings. That’s 115 properties and roughly 8,000 rooms poised to join the Marriott Bonvoy constellation — pending a few dotted lines and handshakes with third-party owners.

Bon voyage to Homogeneity

The Series by Marriott is not about bulldozing individuality, far from it. Each property retains its regional identity while gaining access to Marriott’s muscle: 237 million loyalty members, slick digital booking tools, and a global safety and cleanliness gold standard. Think of it as the hospitality equivalent of joining the world’s most well-heeled rugby club while still wearing your hometown jersey.

Anthony Capuano, President and CEO of Marriott International, put it plainly, but not without purpose: “Series by Marriott furthers Marriott’s commitment to delivering lodging offerings in the right place at the right price with basics done well.”

In Peterese? It means you get a great bed, a cuppa, and Wi-Fi that won’t make you nostalgic for dial-up.

Local Legends Go Global

The Fern brand, long the darling of India’s sustainable stay scene, is now set to become a global ambassador for thoughtful hospitality. Dr Binod Chaudhary, Chairman of CG Corp Global — the majority stakeholder in CHPL — sees this as a natural next step: “Being part of Series by Marriott will allow us to amplify our reach.”

Meanwhile, Param Kannampilly, who has steered CHPL with the steady hand of a conductor and the vision of a cartographer, shared this:

“Our vision is to unlock the immense potential of Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities… rich in culture, heritage, and opportunity.”

In a land where many cities still tuck in nightly with their myths and marketplaces intact, this means bringing world-class hospitality to places that haven’t yet been overrun by influencers wielding drones.

Basics, Beautifully Done

Series by Marriott promises an experience focused on getting the fundamentals right. We’re talking comfy rooms, complimentary Wi-Fi, coffee or tea (daily, naturally), and fitness centres and meeting spaces where applicable. It’s understated elegance, done regionally and with reason.

Properties under the Series brand will reflect the communities they serve while standing tall to Marriott’s global expectations. Guests can earn and redeem Bonvoy points and bask in the subtle luxury of knowing someone thought this through.

A Global Series in the Making

India may be the opening chapter, but this story has a global plotline. Marriott is already in conversation with property owners across the US, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The goal? To find kindred spirits with local flair, fold them gently into the Marriott portfolio, and create a network of authentic yet aligned destinations.

And so Series by Marriott isn’t just a brand launch. It’s a nod to the future of hospitality: respectful of roots, buoyed by boldness, and fluent in both local dialects and global expectations.
