New Trends: Secondary Destinations on the Rise
Catherine Chaulet, President and CEO of Global DMC Partners, noted that the 2024 index offers unique insights into changing preferences within the MICE sector. “It’s exciting to see how some destinations have risen in popularity, especially in light of how our industry reflects broader economic trends. The increased interest in secondary destinations is a fascinating development, and we’re seeing more inquiries for 2024 and beyond in cities that were previously less prominent in this space.”
One region in particular gaining attention is the French Riviera, where event planners are increasingly drawn to destinations like Monaco, Cannes, and Nice. According to Chaulet, “Groups can land in Nice and, within half an hour, be in Monaco or Cannes. These cities offer a trifecta of top-tier event infrastructure, luxury hotels, and stunning surroundings.”
Similarly, Spain is seeing a surge in demand for cities like Málaga, Sevilla, and Valencia. “With daily direct flights from New York, Málaga is quickly becoming a top choice for small to medium-sized groups. Valencia, as the Green European Capital for 2024, is gaining recognition for its exceptional value, while Sevilla continues to be a premier destination for large conferences and congresses,” Chaulet added.
Spotlight on Emerging Global Destinations
In addition to Europe’s rising stars, several other regions are capturing the attention of event planners looking for unique, dynamic venues. Among these are:
- Japan, with its blend of cutting-edge technology and profound cultural heritage.
- Hawaii offers natural beauty and world-class resorts.
- Costa Rica is known for eco-tourism and adventurous incentives.
- Saint Lucia, with its breathtaking landscapes and luxury accommodations.
- The Emilia-Romagna Region in Italy, including Bologna, Parma, and Modena, is recognized for their combination of gastronomic heritage and modern event venues.
- The Greek Islands, such as Corfu, Aegina, and Milos, are known for their serene beauty and diverse options for small-group retreats.
- U.S. secondary cities like Minneapolis, Kansas City, and Louisville are also rising in popularity, offering lower costs, cultural richness, and robust infrastructure for hosting events.
Looking Forward: What Does 2024 Hold?
The 2024 Global Destination Index offers a clear message: The MICE industry is not only back but also poised for dynamic growth. With a resurgence in business travel and a notable shift toward exploring new destinations, the future of meetings and incentives is brighter than ever.
As companies strive to create memorable experiences that inspire and motivate their teams, understanding these emerging trends and destinations will be crucial. The growing interest in secondary and non-traditional locations also suggests a desire for fresh, exciting venues that provide more personalized and unique event experiences.
