Traveloka data shows accommodation searches to Chonburi increased 20% year-on-year, pointing to growing interest in one of Thailand’s most established domestic destinations — a sign that even familiar getaways can still capture fresh attention.

Within easy reach of Bangkok, Chonburi brings together beaches, islands, attractions and a wide range of accommodation. Its accessibility makes it suitable for shorter breaks, while the variety of experiences gives travelers reasons to return at different stages of life.

For many Thai travelers, destinations such as Pattaya, Bangsaen, Koh Si Chang, Koh Larn and Koh Kham are already familiar. A place first visited on a childhood family holiday can later become a trip with friends, a partner or children. The destination may be the same, but the experience changes with the traveler.

When familiarity meets convenience

Traveloka’s data shows that accommodation interest in Chonburi is growing. While search behavior can’t tell us why an individual traveler chooses a destination, the increase suggests a wider travel interest in returning to familiar places.

Hilton’s 2025 Travel Trends Report found that 58% of global travelers are revisiting childhood destinations to relive cherished memories, with almost half of travelers (49%) returning to the same destination annually. This global pattern offers a useful lens for understanding why familiar destinations can take on new relevance for returning travelers, in Thailand and elsewhere.

In Chonburi, that familiarity is reinforced by practical appeal. The province is close to Bangkok, easy to reach and varied enough to offer a different experience as travelers’ companions, interests and reasons for travelling change.

“Travelers are looking for flexibility to take more frequent breaks without having to travel too far. Chonburi fits naturally into this behavior – it is close to Bangkok, easy to reach and offers a variety of experiences. What makes these destinations interesting is that people can return to a place they already know, but experience it differently as their travel companions and interests change,” said Thipaporn Daungmak, Country Manager, Thailand & Singapore, Traveloka.

More than a return to the past

Chonburi’s appeal isn’t limited to nostalgia. Its range of destinations allows travelers to shape different trips around the same province, from a weekend by the sea to an island stay or a break built around food, family activities and local attractions.

A destination first visited with parents may later be experienced with friends, a partner or children. The place remains familiar, but the purpose of the trip and the memories created there continue to change.

This variety also makes familiar destinations easier to rediscover. Travelers can use Traveloka to compare accommodation, transport and activities, bringing the different parts of a domestic trip together in one place.

For Thailand’s tourism sector, the renewed interest in Chonburi shows how established destinations can remain relevant by giving travelers more ways to experience them. Familiarity may open the door, but accessibility, variety and ease of planning give people practical reasons to return.
