Spread the love

Some cafés serve good coffee. Others serve a little hope with it. At Mio Espresso Café in Liverpool, I found something far sweeter than anything on the menu: two people who were willing to give my small business its first big chance.

Their names are John and Carmen. Their café sits inside Liverpool Civic Place at 50 Scott Street, Liverpool NSW, and their kindness has earned them a very special place in my story. My business, Vera’s Premium Cakes, has just received its first commercial order. Better still, my cakes are now on show in a real café, ready for customers to discover.

I have to admit, seeing them there made my heart do a small happy dance. Anyone who has started a business will know the feeling. One minute you are planning, baking and crossing your fingers. The next, your work is sitting proudly under a glass dome. It is quite a moment.

A little cake with a big dream

My signature Pistachio and Rose Petal Butter Cake may look dainty, but it has a lot of heart behind it. I make it with a soft, golden butter-cake base and a rich pistachio-cream topping. Crushed pistachios add a gentle crunch, while edible rose petals add colour and charm.

A simple idea dressed for a special occasion. The butter cake is the cosy part. The pistachio is the star. The rose petals arrive like a lady who knows exactly when to make an entrance.

I wanted to create a cake that felt both familiar and a little bit luxurious. Something you could enjoy over coffee, share with a friend or buy simply because Tuesday needed cheering up. Frankly, I believe a good cake should never have to wait for a birthday.

Now, thanks to John and Carmen, that idea has taken its first step beyond my own kitchen. Seeing the cake displayed at Mio Espresso Café means more to me than a neat row of sales figures ever could. It tells me that an idea, made with care, can find its way into the world.

Breakfast, lunch and a reason to linger

Of course, Mio Espresso Liverpool is not only about my cakes. The café offers a full menu for anyone wanting breakfast, a quick lunch, or a proper coffee break. It offers classic egg dishes, fresh sandwiches, wraps, panini, and more filling lunch options.

The café’s online menu lists smashed avocado on sourdough, eggs Benedict, bagels and grilled chicken dishes. It is the sort of choice that can turn a planned ten-minute coffee stop into a much longer visit. I see no reason to complain.

The café’s savoury food looks bright and inviting. Fresh greens, eggs and colourful ingredients bring plenty of life to the plate. It is a lovely reminder that people often eat with their eyes first. The fork merely follows orders.

For locals, office workers, and visitors to Liverpool, the café offers a handy place to stop on a busy weekday. You can sit down, enjoy a meal or collect something on the go. That mix of ease and care is part of its appeal.

The people behind the counter matter most

Food might bring us through the door, but people give us a reason to return. John and Carmen understand that, and I have felt their support first-hand.

Starting Vera’s Premium Cakes has taken time, effort and more than a few late nights. There are recipes to refine, costs to watch and doubts to push aside. When you work for yourself, even a small win can feel enormous. Your first commercial order is not small at all. It proves someone has faith in what you do.

John and Carmen did more than place an order. They trusted me with a spot in their café and gave my work a chance to meet new customers. I will always be grateful for that trust. It is the kind of support that helps a new business grow its confidence, one slice at a time.

Their own website describes a focus on warm service and community. My experience of their generosity gives those words a very personal meaning. That matters to me much more than polished slogans or fancy décor.

Why supporting local feels so good

We often hear people say we should support small businesses. I agree. But now I can tell you what that support feels like from the other side of the counter.

It feels like excitement mixed with nerves. It feels like checking every detail twice, then checking it once more. It feels like pride when you finally see your work out in the world. Above all, it feels like gratitude to the people who opened that first door.

A café can be part of a neighbourhood in ways that are easy to miss. It offers a place to pause, catch up and feel welcome. When a café also gives another local maker a chance, the good it does travels well beyond the coffee machine.

My verdict? Six stars, naturally!

Yes, I am giving Mio Espresso Café a personal six out of five stars. No, I have not forgotten how maths works. This is my own heartfelt way of saying thank you, not a formal or independent customer rating.

For me, this story is about more than pretty food and a lovely cake display. It is about people who see a new business and choose to help it grow. John and Carmen, thank you for believing in me and making my first commercial order such a happy memory.

If you are in Liverpool, pop into Mio Espresso Café, meet the team and take a look at the menu. And if a slice of pistachio and rose petal butter cake catches your eye, you may just make this baker’s day all over again.

Here’s to strong coffee, kind hearts, new friendships and sweet beginnings. I could not have asked for a lovelier first chapter.
