AYANA Komodo Waecicu Beach has achieved Silver certification from EarthCheck for the second consecutive year, marking a meaningful milestone on the resort’s path toward Gold, for which two further consecutive Silver certifications are required before eligibility. EarthCheck is one of the world’s leading scientific benchmarking and certification programs for travel and tourism, assessing operators against measurable performance indicators spanning energy and water use, waste management, greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity conservation and community engagement.
Because certification depends on independent, third-party assessment against these global standards, it offers a level of accountability that self-reported sustainability claims simply cannot—providing an objective, ongoing measure of how a property’s environmental initiatives are actually performing, year on year.
Water efficiency remains one of the resort’s strongest-performing metrics. Based on the certification’s most recently audited data, from 2024, AYANA Komodo’s water usage per guest per night was approximately 13% below EarthCheck’s regional average. This performance is supported by a combination of measures, including low-flow fixtures across all taps and showers, night-time irrigation scheduling, daily leak checks, and the reuse of roughly 22,079 cubic meters of treated wastewater for garden irrigation, alongside the resort’s use of desalinated water as its primary freshwater source.
The resort’s in-house, marine biologist-led Coral Reef Conservation Project, running since the resort opened in 2018, also continues to expand. In 2025, the team planted 127.66 square meters of coral across the property’s ten restoration areas, more than double its annual target, bringing the cumulative restored area to 486 square meters—an area slightly larger than a basketball court—across 176 coral frames. Guest participation has been a key part of this progress, with over 4,500 guests joining coral-planting activities since they began at the resort, reflecting growing guest interest in taking part directly in marine conservation efforts.
Beyond water and coral, the resort has continued to strengthen its local sourcing and community engagement. Around a quarter of the resort’s contractors are based within West Manggarai Regency, and it works with more than 80 vendors across Flores Island for produce, seafood and other goods, while food waste from its kitchens is diverted to local farmers rather than landfill. The resort also maintains a range of ongoing community partnerships across West Manggarai, from reforestation and river conservation initiatives to local health and cultural programs.
The second consecutive Silver certification reflects a broader, group-wide commitment to independently verified sustainability across AYANA Hospitality’s properties. AYANA Bali achieved EarthCheck Gold certification in 2025, while AYANA Midplaza Jakarta and Delonix Hotel in West Java have each earned EarthCheck Silver certification, together underscoring a long-term, portfolio-wide approach to sustainability that AYANA Komodo continues to build on through its own initiatives and achievements. Looking ahead, the resort’s current priorities include reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, improving waste segregation and diversion from landfill, and continuing to expand its base of local suppliers across Flores and the wider Komodo area.
AYANA Komodo Waecicu Beach’s Sustainability Action Plan, comprising 33 measurable objectives, continues to guide this work, reinforcing the resort’s approach to sustainability as an ongoing, independently measured commitment rather than a fixed achievement.
