Thailand is sharpening its focus on the United States, with the Tourism Authority of Thailand setting a target of 1.5 million American visitors as it pivots away from chasing raw arrival numbers and towards travellers who stay longer, spend more and want something deeper than a quick beach-and-buffet escape.
The direction was reinforced at a strategic meeting at TAT’s New York Office on 17 September. Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, Surasak Phancharoenworakul, chaired the meeting, joined by TAT Board Chairperson Natthriya Thaweevong, TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool and senior executives. Representatives from TAT’s New York, Chicago and Los Angeles offices also took part as the organisation aligned activity across the Americas.
At the centre of the plan is TAT’s “Value over Volume” strategy. It is a neat phrase for a serious commercial objective: lifting the economic value of tourism rather than simply counting more passport stamps.
For a long-haul market such as the United States, the logic is plain. American visitors already tend to stay for extended periods, and TAT wants to attract more travellers prepared to spend on higher-value experiences across the country.
“The Minister’s presence reflects the importance Thailand places on the Americas as a long-haul market. TAT is focusing on travellers who stay longer, spend more and seek experiences with greater depth, supported by partnerships that can convert demand into travel,” Ms Thapanee said.
That final phrase, convert demand into travel, may be the most important part of the strategy.
TAT plans to bring its three North American offices into closer alignment with Team Thailand, airlines, tour operators and tourism partners. The aim is to develop more relevant products, respond to changing traveller behaviour and support year-round demand.
The priority list is broad but commercially attractive. It includes luxury, wellness, gastronomy and sports tourism, together with Millennials and Gen Z travellers, multigenerational families and LGBTQ+ visitors. In other words, Thailand is not putting all its mango sticky rice in one basket.
Hollywood becomes Thailand’s travel brochure
The strategy also taps into one of tourism’s increasingly powerful motivators: the screen.
TAT says film tourism and “set-jetting” will turn Thailand’s exposure in major international productions, including The White Lotus Season 3, Jurassic World: Rebirth, Alien: Earth and The Challenge Season 42, into real-world interest in Thai destinations, food, wellness, culture, nature and local lifestyles.
It is a smart piece of destination marketing. Television and film can put a place into the traveller’s imagination before an airfare is searched or a hotel is booked. Thailand has long understood the power of image; the new strategy aims to convert that visibility more systematically into travel.
American visitors already deliver value
The US market already gives TAT a substantial base to build on. Thailand welcomed 1,081,929 visitors from the United States in 2025, the second consecutive year in which arrivals from the market exceeded one million.
According to TAT, those travellers stayed an average of 14.59 nights and spent more than 69,415 baht per person per trip. From 1 January to 15 September 2026, Thailand recorded 716,983 US arrivals.
The 1.5 million target therefore signals a sizeable ambition. Importantly, TAT’s announcement does not specify the precise deadline attached to that figure, so it should be treated as a strategic target rather than automatically described as a 2026 year-end forecast.
For the travel trade, however, the bigger story is the machinery being assembled behind the headline number. Airline partnerships, tour operator cooperation, product development and sharper segmentation will be critical.
Long-haul tourism is rarely won by slogans alone. Seats, distribution, pricing and conversion all need to pull in the same direction.
New York celebrates 61 years of selling Thailand
The New York meeting also carried a touch of history. TAT held a Buddhist blessing ceremony for the new premises of its New York Office, attended by Thailand’s Consul-General in New York, Somjai Taphaopong, representatives of Team Thailand and TAT executives.
The occasion marked 61 years of TAT’s presence in New York. The office began operations on 15 May 1965 as the Tourist Organization Thailand New York Office, a reminder that Thailand’s courtship of the American traveller predates social media, online booking engines and quite a few airline loyalty programs.
Six decades later, the sales pitch has become more sophisticated, but the objective remains familiar: persuade Americans that Thailand is worth the long flight.
The difference now is that TAT wants those travellers to do more once they arrive: stay longer, explore further, spend more thoughtfully and engage with a broader range of Thai experiences.
For travel advisers, airlines and tour operators, that creates obvious opportunities. A strategy built around luxury, wellness, gastronomy, sport, family travel and screen-inspired itineraries gives the trade more room to build higher-value packages than a campaign centred on arrival numbers alone.
Thailand has never lacked visual appeal. Its latest North American strategy focuses on turning that appeal into stronger commercial returns and giving the US travel industry more reasons to keep the Kingdom firmly on the selling map.
