In Oregon, Indigenous chef Alexa Numkena-Anderson is shaping a culinary moment with Javelina, Portland’s first Indigenous restaurant, while James Beard-nominated Indigenous chef Jack Strong has joined Bellpine at the Ritz-Carlton, Portland. Other Indigenous-owned businesses across Oregon, include Bison Coffeehouse, Portland’s only Native-owned coffee shop; Ice Queen, a Chicana- and Indigenous-owned vegan paleteria known for inventive popsicle flavours like oatchata and mangonada; Sakari Farms, transforming ancestral seeds and Native botanicals into healing teas, hot sauces and traditional products; and Greywing Cellars, recognized by Wine Enthusiast as one of the world’s most influential Indigenous-owned wineries.
New seafood trail lands in Oregon:
Launched in time for the annual crabbing season in November, the new Oregon Seafood Trail puts the people behind the catch at the centre. From dock to plate, visitors can enjoy “Oregon-landed” seafood, meaning the catch was delivered to a port in Oregon that directly supports local fisheries – considered among the most sustainably managed in the world. The trail guides travellers to vetted fisher-family-run restaurants, markets, food carts and dockside retailers that prioritize local seafood, including pink shrimp, albacore tuna, groundfish, Dungeness crab and more. Each stop offers more than a meal, offering a window into the working waterfronts that sustain Oregon’s coastal communities.
Oregon trails welcome accessible travellers:
After earning the landmark designation as the first state to become “Accessibility Verified” by Wheel the World, Oregon knows its work to make the state accessible to all visitors has just begun. A series of thoughtfully designed trail upgrades have expanded access to the outdoors. The new Dollar Mountain Trail System in Southern Oregon and Buzzard Butte Trail Network on the Oregon Coast, both welcome the use of adaptive mobility bikes. In the Mt. Hood National Forest, the newly rebuilt Trillium Lake Loop Trail boardwalk provides an upgraded, wider pathway, enhancing accessibility for visitors with limited mobility to enjoy several marshy stretches on an elevated, level pathway that protects sensitive wetlands.
