Accommodation includes comfortable six-share mixed dormitories, a dedicated female-only dormitory and couples-only rooms, providing a relaxed and social base from which to explore the island.

As the world’s largest sand island, K’gari is home to a natural environment found nowhere else on Earth. Towering rainforests grow from ancient sand dunes, crystal-clear freshwater lakes are nestled among the dunes, and more than 120 kilometres of spectacular beaches stretch along the Queensland coast.

The UNESCO World Heritage-listed island is also home to half of the world’s perched freshwater dune lakes and is the only place in the world where tall rainforests grow on sand dunes at elevations above 200 metres.

Guests staying at K’gari Backpackers can bring their own 4WD and set out to discover the island at their own pace, exploring some of K’gari’s most iconic natural attractions, including:

  • Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora), famous for its brilliant white silica sands and crystal-clear blue waters
  • Eli Creek, where millions of litres of fresh water flow towards the ocean every hour
  • 75 Mile Beach, K’gari’s spectacular eastern beach and one of the island’s great 4WD experiences
  • Central Station, where towering rainforest, giant trees and fern-lined boardwalks reveal the remarkable environment growing from the sand.

Travellers without their own 4WD don’t have to miss out, with the option to combine their stay with a two-day K’gari Explorer Tour and experience the island’s beaches, lakes, rainforests and other natural highlights.

Located within K’gari Beach Resort, K’gari Backpackers combines the affordability and social atmosphere of backpacker accommodation with access to resort facilities and a prime location on the island’s eastern side.

Conor Ross, General Manager K’gari Beach Resort said K’gari Backpackers would provide a new way for adventure seekers to stay on the island and experience everything that makes K’gari so extraordinary.

“K’gari is unlike anywhere else in the world. You can drive along seemingly endless beaches, swim in incredibly clear freshwater lakes and then find yourself walking beneath towering rainforest growing straight out of the sand,” Mr Ross said.

“K’gari Backpackers gives travellers an affordable base right here on the island, so they can spend their days exploring and their evenings sharing those experiences with other travellers.

“Whether you’re arriving with your own 4WD, travelling with friends, exploring solo or joining one of our K’gari Explorer Tours, it’s all about giving people more ways to get out and experience this incredible World Heritage-listed destination.”

The new accommodation provides another option for backpackers, road trippers and independent travellers looking for an affordable way to spend more time exploring K’gari and experiencing one of Australia’s most remarkable nature-based destinations.
