Vietnam’s luxury rail sector has welcomed a well-dressed new passenger, with Italian luxury travel group Arsenale acquiring a 33 per cent strategic stake in SJourney and backing the Vietnamese operator’s next stage of international growth.
The agreement gives Arsenale a minority position in SJourney while leaving the Vietnamese brand firmly at the centre of the product. It also marks Arsenale’s entry into Vietnam, adding another stop to a luxury rail network that already stretches across Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
For SJourney, the attraction is more than a cheque and a handshake.
The company will gain access to Arsenale’s international commercial network, distribution channels and rail and hospitality expertise, with the partnership intended to support future routes, new markets and improvements to the onboard experience.
Three new carriages are also planned as part of the next phase of product development.
Golden Eagle joins the journey
Another important name is joining the timetable.
The partnership includes licensing of the Golden Eagle brand, meaning the Vietnamese operation will trade as SJourney by Golden Eagle.
The structure is designed to retain SJourney’s local identity while giving it the international recognition and distribution muscle of an established luxury rail name.
That balancing act matters.
Luxury travel is littered with brands that expand internationally only to discover that “global” can become a polite synonym for “could be anywhere”.
SJourney’s pitch has always been the opposite: Vietnam is not merely outside the window; it is the point of the journey.
The operator has built its proposition around slower, immersive travel through the country’s landscapes, historic cities, rural communities, coastal regions and cultural destinations.
Its established journey connects Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City across approximately 1,726 kilometres, taking eight days and seven nights and combining rail travel with cultural and scenic experiences along Vietnam’s north-south corridor.
That makes the investment particularly interesting for travel advisors selling Vietnam at the premium end of the market.
Rail can turn what is normally the functional business of travelling between destinations into part of the holiday itself. It also gives clients an alternative to the familiar procession of airport check-ins, domestic flights, hotel changes and heroic battles with an overpacked suitcase.
Vietnam remains firmly on board
SJourney co-founder and Business Development Manager Thang Phan said preserving that Vietnamese character would remain central as the company expanded.
“As we grow, what matters most is that we remain unmistakably Vietnamese and continue to build every journey around a genuine sense of place,” Phan said.
It is a sensible line to draw.
The international luxury rail market increasingly trades on experience, theatre and access rather than transport alone.
Guests are not simply buying a bed that happens to move overnight. They are buying the dining car, the view, the service, the pause between cities and, ideally, the pleasant sensation that nobody is about to announce boarding group six.
Arsenale builds its rail ambitions
Arsenale brings considerable strategic weight to that ambition.
Founded in 2020, the Rome-based group operates across luxury hospitality and rail travel and has been assembling an international rail portfolio spanning markets including Italy, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.
In September 2025, Arsenale acquired Golden Eagle Luxury Trains Ltd, expanding its reach into established long-distance luxury rail travel. Golden Eagle today operates private-train experiences across Europe, Central Asia, China and other international markets.
The SJourney investment therefore looks less like an isolated punt and more like another piece in a broader luxury rail strategy.
Vietnam offers many of the ingredients such products require: long distances, striking scenery, deep cultural heritage, and destinations that reward travellers prepared to slow down rather than simply fly over the interesting bits.
For SJourney, the deal should provide greater access to international travel sellers and affluent travellers who may know the Golden Eagle name but have yet to discover the Vietnamese operator.
For Arsenale, SJourney provides a local platform with existing destination knowledge and operational experience rather than requiring the Italian group to build a Vietnamese luxury rail proposition from scratch.
Crucially, Arsenale remains a strategic minority shareholder.
SJourney says its Vietnamese identity, local expertise and sense of place will continue to shape the guest experience even as the company seeks a wider international audience.
That is likely to be the real test of the partnership.
Luxury rail works when the train becomes part hotel, part theatre and part destination — but only when the scenery outside and the culture aboard still belong convincingly to the country being crossed.
If SJourney and Arsenale keep that equation intact, the new partnership could give Vietnam’s luxury rail proposition considerably more international pulling power.
And in a travel industry often obsessed with getting people somewhere faster, there is something refreshing about a business model built around persuading travellers to slow down, settle in, and enjoy the ride.
