Gulgong, the historic gold rush town at the heart of the Mudgee Region, has today taken home Silver in the line up for Australia’s Top Small Tourism Town at the Australian Top Tourism Town Awards, announced  at Parliament House, Canberra. The Silver place honour follows Gulgong’s Gold win in the NSW Small Tourism Town category in May and recognises the depth of experience the town delivers well beyond its size.

Gulgong is home to more than 130 National Trust-listed buildings, forming one of the most intact gold rush-era streetscapes in the country. Visitors can explore the town’s rich heritage, thriving food and wine scene, boutique accommodation, growing arts and culture calendar, and access to some of NSW’s most striking natural landscapes, anchored by landmarks including the Gulgong Pioneers Museum and the Prince of Wales Opera House.

Gulgong sits within the Mudgee Region, a central west destination made up of four distinct towns – Mudgee, Gulgong, Kandos and Rylstone – along with a number of small villages, each with their own character. The region has built a national reputation across wine, food, arts and nature, and has emerged as one of NSW’s most sought-after regional escapes for Sydney and regional NSW travellers.

Beau Kassas, Chief Marketing Officer of Mudgee Region Tourism, said the Silver win is proof that the region’s “small but mighty” approach resonates well beyond the state’s borders.

“Gulgong proves that small regions drive big impact – and this recognition is a testament to exactly why slow travel is on the rise. From food and wine to the vibrant heritage, arts and the great outdoors, Gulgong delivers the kind of experience people are genuinely seeking right now. Real, considered, and completely its own. It goes to show that our small region of Gulgong, can compete with the thriving destinations like Airlie Beach who took home the Gold in our category”
