As Taiwan’s reputation as one of Asia’s most exciting cycling destinations gathers international momentum, World Expeditions has launched a new seven-day guided adventure taking riders from the mountain-framed shores of Sun Moon Lake through tea country, historic Tainan and on to the Pacific coast.
The new Taiwan Cycle: Mountains, Culture & Coast arrives at an opportune time. Sun Moon Lake, where the journey begins, has this year been awarded the 2026 Tour de France Cycle City designation, one of only 25 destinations worldwide to receive the recognition and just six outside France. Taiwan’s annual Cycling Festival is also currently underway, running from September to December 2026.
“Taiwan has been hiding in plain sight as an adventure destination, but that is clearly changing,” said Sue Badyari, CEO of World Expeditions.
“It has a deeply embedded cycling culture, superb riding and an extraordinary amount to experience in a relatively small area. Add one of Asia’s most exciting food scenes, mountains, tea country, hot springs and the Pacific coast, and you have a destination made for active travel. With Sun Moon Lake now receiving international recognition from the Tour de France, there couldn’t be a better time to discover Taiwan from the bike saddle.”
The journey combines six days of cycling with cultural experiences, local food, hot springs and comfortable hotel stays, allowing travellers to experience a side of Taiwan well beyond its major cities.
From a 30km circuit of Sun Moon Lake, riders continue through the Nantou Valley and rural communities before entering Taiwan’s tea-growing hills and descending the famous 36 Bends, an 11.8km road featuring 36 numbered hairpin turns.
The itinerary also explores Tainan, Taiwan’s historic former capital, renowned for its temples, heritage and food traditions, before continuing south through rural valleys and hot springs to the Pacific coast, with rides towards Baisha Beach, Nanwan Beach and the southern peninsula. Tainan’s culinary credentials have also received a boost this year, with the city gaining its first Michelin-starred restaurant as part of the expanded 2026 Michelin Guide Taiwan. (MICHELIN Guide)
Daily rides generally range from 30km to 66km. The Moderate / Grade 5 itinerary incorporates undulating terrain, climbs and descents and is best suited to confident cyclists with a good level of fitness.
An expert bilingual cycling guide accompanies the group, with a bike mechanic and support vehicle on cycling days. A 24-speed GIANT bike is included, while e-bikes are available on request. Accommodation is in three-star hotels with ensuite facilities.
Taiwan Cycle: Mountains, Culture & Coast is seven days, with the inaugural departure on 16 November 2026, followed by selected departures from March to November 2027.
