More than two weeks after Iceland’s first total solar eclipse since 1954, a clearer picture is emerging of how the event unfolded across the country’s west. A new Arctic Adventures retrospective combines verified weather data, regional timings, eyewitness reports, and wildlife observations to document what happened when the Moon’s shadow crossed the Westfjords, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Reykjavík and the Reykjanes Peninsula on August 12.

REYKJAVÍK, Iceland, August 28, 2026 — Just over two weeks after the Moon’s shadow crossed western Iceland, verified weather records and reports from inside the path of totality are providing a clearer picture of how the country experienced its first total solar eclipse in 72 years.
The August 12 eclipse brought totality to the Westfjords, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Reykjavík and the Reykjanes Peninsula. Outside that narrow path, the rest of Iceland experienced a deep partial eclipse, with more than 95% of the Sun covered.

Totality Moved Across Western Iceland in Minutes
The partial eclipse began across Iceland at approximately 4:47 PM local time. Totality reached the Westfjords first, at around 5:43 PM, before moving east across the country.
Reykjavík experienced an eclipse at approximately 5:48 PM. The shadow reached the Reykjanes Peninsula at around 5:50 PM. Totality lasted about one minute in Reykjavík and more than two minutes in parts of the Westfjords and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
Látrabjarg cliff in the Westfjords had Iceland’s longest period of totality on land, lasting approximately 2 minutes and 13 seconds. Hellissandur and Rif towns on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula experienced about 2 minutes and 7 seconds.
The distance between the regions created noticeable differences in timing and duration. Western locations closer to the center of the Moon’s shadow experienced the longest darkness.
Clouds Changed the View, Not the Experience
Cloud and damp weather affected much of Iceland’s totality zone. Icelandic Met Office observations recorded temperatures ranging from 10.8°C (51°F) on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula to 14.9°C (59°F) in the Capital Region.
Cloud thickened and drizzle developed on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The Westfjords remained cloudy, while the Reykjanes Peninsula was overcast with light drizzle. Reykjavík experienced overcast skies and rain showers. Winds across the main observation areas remained light to moderate at approximately 2.2 to 5.4 m/s (5 to 12 mph).
The cloud prevented some viewers from seeing the Sun’s outer atmosphere, known as the corona. However, the main effects of totality remained unmistakable. Afternoon light disappeared, colors faded, the air cooled, and western Iceland briefly resembled dusk.
“You don’t need perfect skies,” said Icelandic astronomer and science communicator Sævar Helgi Bragason. “A cloudy total solar eclipse is far more interesting than a 99% clear partial eclipse.”
Birds Fell Silent as Darkness Arrived
Reports from the Snæfellsnes Peninsula documented changes beyond the sky. Arctic Adventures day-tour guide Þórhallur Ævar said Arctic terns were loud before totality but became almost silent after the landscape darkened.
Þórhallur and two other guides saw an evening-like glow along the western horizon and felt a cold breeze behind them. The birds became loud again as daylight returned.
“Then, like opening a curtain slowly, everything got bright again,” Þórhallur said. “The birds got loud again, and the temperature rose by about 5°C in two minutes.”
Driver-guide Freysteinn Gíslason led a private family group based at Adventure Hotel Hellissandur. Increasing cloud and drizzle had left the guests concerned that they might miss the event. The mood changed when the landscape darkened and the group began cheering.
Looking west across the sea, Freysteinn saw light reach distant land before appearing to move back toward the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
International Demand Built Months Before the Eclipse
The eclipse also generated an unusually long travel-planning window. Arctic Adventures ran dedicated minibus and Super Jeep departures, a six-day Ring Road itinerary with eclipse viewing included, and private minibus and Super Jeep experiences.
Across these formats, the company welcomed several hundred guests during the eclipse period. The departures were essentially fully booked by the beginning of 2026, more than seven months before the event.
Arctic Adventures’ internal reservation records show that the United States was the largest source market for eclipse bookings. The United Kingdom, Canada, Iceland and Denmark followed. The United States also produced the most notable source-market growth during the booking period.
Travelers who arrived for the eclipse booked other Iceland activities during their stays, extending the event’s effect beyond the dedicated eclipse departures. The pattern suggests that rare astronomical events can encourage longer planning windows and wider travel activity around a fixed date.
Iceland’s Next Eclipses
The next solar eclipse visible from Iceland will be a partial eclipse on August 2, 2027. The event will not bring totality to Iceland.
Iceland will not experience another total solar eclipse until June 26, 2196. The August 2026 eclipse was therefore the only totality over Iceland that most people alive today will ever experience.
