Adventure South NZ will incorporate the highly anticipated Kawarau Gorge Trail into four multi-day cycling itineraries following its official opening on Sunday October 25, 2026 (New Zealand’s Labour Weekend), giving riders the opportunity to experience the challenging new backcountry route alongside some of the South Island’s best-known Great Rides.

Construction crews are making strong progress across the trail, with helicopter operations underway to transport specially blended surface material into the remote gorge. Work is also advancing on the dramatic Iron Ridge structures upstream from Roaring Meg, while the major suspension bridges crossing the Kawarau River will be completed during the final stage of construction.

Adventure South NZ General Manager Angela Sexton said the Kawarau Gorge Trail would offer a markedly different experience from the nearby Lake Dunstan Trail.

“This is a true backcountry trail. It is remote, rugged and physically rewarding making it ideal for riders looking for a more adventurous experience. With the right preparation and the support of experienced local guides, it will be an unforgettable journey,” Ms Sexton said.

“The Kawarau Gorge Trail definitely steps things up another notch. Riders should be prepared for a more physically demanding experience, but for those seeking a bigger adventure, it will be an unforgettable way to experience this spectacular landscape,” Ms Sexton said.

Rather than offering the one-day ride as a standalone trip, Adventure South NZ has incorporated the 34km Kawarau Gorge Trail into four itineraries combining it with other outstanding cycling routes across Central Otago and the wider South Island.

“The addition of the Kawarau Gorge Trail further cements Central Otago as one of New Zealand’s premier cycling destinations. By linking the Lake Dunstan Trail with the Queenstown Trails network, it creates an exceptional multi-day journey that can also be combined with the Roxburgh Gorge and Otago Central Rail trails, showcasing the remarkable diversity of riding experiences across the region,” Ms Sexton said.

The first Adventure South NZ itineraries featuring the trail are:

Cycle Kawarau Gorge, Dunstan & Otago Rail Trails – First departure 17-21 November
Cycle the Kawarau, Dunstan & Roxburgh Gorges – First departure 26-30 October

Best of South Island’s Great Rides – First departure 20–27 October
South Island Great Rides Explorer – First departure 23 October – 6 November

The Iron Ridge section takes its name from an iron bar discovered embedded in the hillside, a reminder of the rugged routes used by early pioneers navigating the gorge. Safety barriers and signage will be installed before the trail opens to the public in October.
