Australia’s first professional domestic surfing property, the Surfing Super League (SSL), officially launches today. The league launch heralds an 18-month commercial rollout ahead of its inaugural 2028 season, which will see eight franchises compete on eight consecutive summer weekends across Australia’s East Coast, broadcast live.

The launch kicks off a strategic build to convert Australia’s massive, under-commercialised surfing audience into a scalable sports asset. Research from the Australian National University values recreational surfing’s direct contribution to the national economy at A$2.71 billion annually.

However, despite having 6.3 million active surfers and 7.3 million fans nationally, the sport currently captures a tiny fraction of the commercial revenue generated by traditional domestic leagues like the NRL or Big Bash League (BBL).

The Surfing Super League (SSL) is engineered to close that gap by solving surfing’s historical broadcast limitations. Replacing unpredictable waiting periods with 15 live games of exactly 90 minutes across locked weekend windows, the league delivers ~30 hours of guaranteed, fixed-duration summer television content.

Founded by Chris Mater — a former Red Bull executive and seven-year CEO of Surfing Australia – the Surfing Super League introduces a dual-tier commercial framework allowing investors to access both a league-level asset and eight regional franchises. Operating within a finite eight-week summer window, the Surfing Super League complements the global surfing ecosystem, allowing athletes to retain personal sponsors and compete on international tours outside the league season.

Chris Mater, founder and CEO of the Surfing Super League, said: “Australian sport has been waiting for its next great summer property, and surfing is the obvious candidate: culturally central, massively popular, yet virtually uncommercialised at home. We have combined the structure of a modern franchise competition with the cultural reach of surfing so the market finally has a direct way to invest in the sport itself.

“VC and private equity investment is unlocking the commercial value of underserved sports fanbases globally. With massive participation growth and untapped revenue potential, we are building a scalable framework for partners and investors to own a piece of Australia’s next major sports ecosystem.”
