There are ordinary aircraft arrivals, accompanied by baggage belts, boarding bridges and the familiar stampede towards the mobile-phone queue.
Then there are arrivals that draw a line through aviation history.
The first Airbus A350-1000ULR developed for Qantas’ ambitious Project Sunrise program touched down in Melbourne on Friday, 24 July 2026, after completing a marathon non-stop test flight from Airbus’ manufacturing base in Toulouse.
It was not carrying holidaymakers, honeymooners or executives already wondering whether their luggage had made the connection. There was no connection.
That, rather fittingly, is the entire point.
The extraordinary aircraft, registered F-WULR and identified as manufacturer serial number MSN707, spent approximately 19 hours and 13 minutes in the air while covering close to 17,000 kilometres between southern France and Australia. Its long journey reportedly attracted more than 67,000 online flight-tracker viewers, proving once again that aviation enthusiasts require neither sleep nor a boarding pass when something historically significant appears on a radar screen.
The aircraft’s arrival marked its first appearance on Australian soil and a critical milestone in the flight-test campaign for Project Sunrise, Qantas’ plan to operate world-first non-stop commercial services connecting Sydney directly with London and New York.
Commercial Project Sunrise services are now scheduled to begin with Sydney–London flights in October 2027, with tickets expected to go on sale in February 2027. The Sydney–New York service is expected to follow.
After years of announcements, engineering challenges, certification programs, revised delivery schedules and more aviation acronyms than any reasonable passenger should be expected to remember, Project Sunrise has finally become something Australians can see with their own eyes.
And it is enormous.
A flying laboratory reaches Melbourne
This was no conventional airline delivery flight.
The A350-1000ULR remains an Airbus test aircraft and arrived in Melbourne as a flying laboratory, packed with specialist instrumentation rather than Qantas’ finished First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy cabins.
The test flight was operated by four Airbus flight-test pilots and five flight-test engineers, who evaluated the aircraft’s systems throughout the journey. Among the most important items under examination was the specially redesigned fuel system and its additional 20,000-litre rear centre tank.
That extra tank is central to the entire Project Sunrise proposition. It extends the aircraft’s endurance sufficiently to support commercial flights of up to 22 hours, enabling Qantas to cover nearly 10,000 nautical miles without an intermediate stop.
That is the sort of endurance once associated with military reconnaissance aircraft, adventurous ferry flights and passengers trapped beside someone who removes their shoes before the seatbelt sign has been extinguished.
Qantas intends to turn it into a scheduled service.
Airbus says the A350-1000ULR is being developed specifically to overcome one of the last great barriers in non-stop commercial aviation: connecting Australia’s east coast directly with major European and North American cities. Qantas has ordered 12 A350-1000ULRs for the program.

Tracking reports showed the aircraft travelling from Europe across Egypt and Saudi Arabia, continuing over India and the Indian Ocean before approaching Australia.
Readers wishing to find the aircraft on public tracking services should search for its registration, F-WULR, rather than expecting a conventional Qantas flight number such as QF1.
Because this is an Airbus certification and development aircraft, its displayed callsign may vary between individual test missions. Searching by registration remains the most reliable method on services such as Flightradar24, FlightAware and AirNav RadarBox.

Born in Toulouse, tested across the world
The aircraft completed its maiden flight from Toulouse on 2 June 2026, beginning a demanding certification campaign involving extensive testing both in the air and on the ground.
Airbus’ initial flight program assessed the aircraft’s basic handling, systems operation and specially adapted fuel architecture. During its maiden test flight, the aircraft flew for approximately three hours and 43 minutes before returning to Toulouse.
The Melbourne mission was dramatically more ambitious.
Instead of circling within convenient reach of Toulouse and its engineering teams, the aircraft was sent almost halfway around the world, keeping its systems operating continuously for the sort of duration Project Sunrise passengers will eventually experience.
The purpose was not simply to prove that the A350 could remain airborne. Airbus already knows how to build long-range aircraft.
The task was to test how this particular A350-1000ULR performs with its additional fuel capacity, modified systems and unique mission requirements across an authentic ultra-long-range sector.
The aircraft is expected to remain in Melbourne during the weekend before departing for Toulouse on Monday, 27 July 2026, as the Airbus flight-test program continues.
Two Qantas pilots are scheduled to join the Airbus flight-test crew for the return journey to France, giving the airline’s own pilots direct exposure to the aircraft and its long-range operating characteristics.
That return flight will be another important test mission rather than a ceremonial homeward hop. After almost 20 hours travelling in one direction, the aircraft and its engineers must, rather inconveniently, turn around and do it again.
The aircraft that could end the final stopover
Project Sunrise has always been about more than range.
Australia’s distance from the world’s major commercial centres has shaped the nation’s aviation industry for more than a century. Every generation of airliner has made the journey faster, safer or more comfortable, but geography has remained stubbornly unimpressed.
The early Kangaroo Route required numerous stops between Australia and Britain.
The Boeing 707 introduced the speed and glamour of the jet age.
The Boeing 747 carried greater numbers across the world and turned international travel into something millions of Australians could realistically contemplate.
The Boeing 787-9 later enabled Qantas to launch Perth–London non-stop services in 2018, providing the first scheduled direct air link between Australia and Europe.
Project Sunrise aims to complete the job.
Qantas says the future Sydney–London non-stop service could save customers up to four hours compared with the fastest one-stop journey available today. The new flights will operate alongside, rather than replace, Qantas’ existing Perth–London and Sydney–Singapore–London services.
That distinction matters.
Not every traveller wants to remain inside an aircraft for roughly 20 or 21 hours, regardless of how thoughtfully the lighting has been designed. Some will still prefer to break the journey in Singapore or another established transit hub.
Others, particularly time-conscious business travellers, premium passengers and those who regard airport connections as an elaborate test of human patience, will happily pay for the shortest possible journey.
Project Sunrise gives them that choice.
Vega prepares to wear the Flying Kangaroo
While F-WULR performs the demanding work of certification testing, the first aircraft intended for delivery to Qantas continues to take shape on the Airbus final assembly line.
That aircraft has been named Vega, after one of the brightest stars visible from Earth and an important celestial reference for navigators.
Vega is now scheduled to be delivered to Qantas in April 2027, ahead of the planned October launch of Sydney–London services.
The name is entirely appropriate.
Long before satellite navigation, aircraft crossed oceans by relying partly on celestial observations. Project Sunrise carries that tradition into a vastly different era, where pilots will command one of the most sophisticated commercial aircraft ever produced while passengers complain that the Wi-Fi briefly slowed somewhere over the Indian Ocean.
Qantas first selected the A350-1000 for Project Sunrise after evaluating the aircraft against competing long-range proposals. The airline placed its firm order for 12 aircraft in 2022, choosing the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-powered Airbus as the platform capable of opening the world’s longest commercial routes.
Just 238 passengers aboard a very large aircraft
Perhaps the most revealing Project Sunrise number is not 22 hours, 20,000 litres or nearly 17,000 kilometres.
It is 238.
Qantas will configure each A350-1000ULR with just 238 seats across four cabins, substantially fewer than the 300-plus seats commonly fitted to aircraft of comparable size.
That decision gives passengers more personal space while reducing the payload carried across these extreme distances.
The cabin will contain:
Six First suites
52 Business suites
40 Premium Economy seats
140 Economy seats
A purpose-designed Wellbeing Zone will be available to passengers from every cabin, providing an area for stretching, movement, hydration and light refreshments during the ultra-long journey.
The First suites are designed more like compact private rooms than conventional airline seats, featuring a separate fixed bed, reclining chair, wardrobe and dining space.
Business Class will provide direct aisle access, sliding privacy doors and fully flat beds.
Premium Economy and Economy passengers have not been forgotten, which is fortunate because there will be 180 of them. Qantas has promised additional legroom, purpose-designed seating, personal storage and cabin lighting developed to support passenger comfort and sleep.
The airline has worked with scientists from the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre to investigate lighting, meal timing, movement and sleep patterns intended to reduce the effects of jet lag.
This research is especially important when passengers may cross as many as 16 time zones on one flight.
Engineering must meet human endurance
The success of Project Sunrise will depend on far more than fuel capacity.
An aircraft can be engineered to fly for 22 hours. Persuading passengers and crew to emerge at the other end feeling remotely civilised is a more complicated exercise.
Ultra-long-haul flying creates operational questions involving pilot rest, cabin-crew scheduling, hydration, sleep, movement, meal timing and passenger wellbeing.
Qantas began investigating these issues years before the A350-1000ULR took flight.
In 2019, the airline operated Project Sunrise research flights using Boeing 787-9 aircraft between New York and Sydney and between London and Sydney. Those flights carried researchers who studied sleep, alertness, meal timing and the physical effects of crossing numerous time zones.
The knowledge collected during those flights has influenced the A350 cabin, lighting system, food service and Wellbeing Zone.
Project Sunrise, therefore, is not simply a longer version of an ordinary international flight.
It represents an attempt to redesign the complete long-haul experience around a journey lasting almost an entire day.
There will be no midnight wander through a transit terminal. No boarding pass for a second aircraft. No security re-screening. No sprint between distant gates while carrying three duty-free bags and questioning every decision that led to that moment.
Passengers will board in Sydney and remain aboard until London.
Simple in theory. Monumentally complicated in practice.
A historic arrival and a warning against premature celebration
The Melbourne landing deserves celebration, but it does not mean Project Sunrise has completed its journey.
The aircraft must still finish its certification campaign. Airbus must validate the redesigned fuel system and other specialised equipment. Qantas must receive enough aircraft to operate a dependable commercial schedule. Crews must be trained, regulatory approvals secured and the final onboard product installed.
Ultra-long-haul operations also remain highly sensitive to winds, airspace restrictions, payload requirements and fuel reserves.
The aircraft may be capable of extraordinary range, but aviation has never been impressed by marketing brochures. It answers only to engineering, weather, regulation and operational reality.
That is precisely why the Toulouse–Melbourne test flight matters.
It moved Project Sunrise from artist impressions, cabin mock-ups and corporate presentations into the far less forgiving world of actual flight operations.
For more than 19 hours, the A350-1000ULR remained airborne over almost 17,000 kilometres and delivered its engineers and pilots safely to Melbourne.
That is not the end of the test campaign.
It is compelling evidence that one of aviation’s boldest commercial ambitions is becoming real.
A new sunrise for Australian aviation
The name Project Sunrise reaches back to Qantas’ celebrated “Double Sunrise” flights of the Second World War.
Those Catalina flying-boat services linked Perth and Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, and remained airborne long enough for passengers to witness two sunrises during the journey. Qantas later revived that spirit when naming its modern quest to connect Australia’s east coast directly with London and New York.
The comparison is fitting.
The original Double Sunrise flights represented endurance, ingenuity and Australia’s determination to maintain its connection with the wider world under extraordinarily difficult circumstances.
The A350-1000ULR represents the same instinct, transformed by eight decades of technological progress.
One aircraft travelled slowly across the ocean with celestial navigation, sparse comforts and wartime necessity.
The other uses composite materials, satellite systems, advanced aerodynamics and Rolls-Royce engines to carry 238 passengers across nearly half the planet.
Yet the ambition remains familiar.
Australia has never been conveniently located. Australian aviation has simply become exceptionally good at refusing to accept inconvenience as permanent.
When F-WULR descended into Melbourne, it brought more than pilots, engineers and test equipment to Australian soil.
It carried the physical proof of an idea that once sounded almost unreasonable: board in Sydney, fly directly to London, and arrive without setting foot in another airport.
There was no scheduled Qantas service number painted into the history books today.
No paying passengers toasted the arrival.
No First suite was occupied, and nobody stretched theatrically inside the Wellbeing Zone.
But history does not always arrive wearing its final colours.
Sometimes it arrives as a test aircraft from Toulouse, covered in instrumentation, pursued online by tens of thousands of aviation enthusiasts and carrying just enough fuel, technology and Australian ambition to make the world feel considerably smaller.
Project Sunrise is no longer sitting beyond the horizon.
It has landed.
