Aviation has always been a business of tight margins, tighter schedules and queues that appear precisely when everyone is late. Now the industry has been handed an even larger assignment: carry far more passengers without simply doubling airports, aircraft, border booths or baggage belts.

SITA’s Impact Report 2025, released in Geneva on 6 July 2026, frames the challenge with useful bluntness. Aviation is preparing to move twice as many passengers within a generation, and the answer, increasingly, is not more concrete. It is smarter technology used properly, from border control to baggage recovery and flight operations.

The public SITA release says the industry will carry 8 billion passengers a year over the next 20 to 25 years, rising to 10 billion by 2050, according to IATA. That is not a gentle growth curve. It is a full boarding call for airlines, airports, governments and travel suppliers to make the system work harder without making passengers feel as if they have been trapped in a queue since Tuesday.

David Lavorel, CEO of SITA, puts the central question neatly: “how do we move twice as many travelers without doubling our infrastructure?” The spelling may be American, but the problem is universal. Airports cannot wait decades for every terminal expansion to arrive, and governments cannot process tomorrow’s passengers with yesterday’s paper chase.

The border is where travellers may first see the change. In Aruba, SITA says pre-cleared passengers can complete border processing on arrival in as little as eight seconds, 78 per cent faster than before, by combining digital travel credentials with biometric checks. Behind that, more than 271 million travellers a year receive a SITA-supported risk assessment before arrival, with most completed in under four seconds.

That is the sort of speed every weary long-haul passenger understands. It is not technology for a glossy brochure. It is technology that reduces friction where it hurts most: at the point where a traveller, a passport and a government system must agree to behave.

Artificial intelligence is also shifting from experimental theatre into the working engine room. SITA OptiFlight uses machine learning and digital twin modelling to recommend fuel-efficient climb and cruise profiles for pilots. In 2025, SITA says the system processed 2.9 million flights for 59 airline customers, saving 127,732 tons of fuel and the equivalent of 403,633 tons of CO2.

For aviation, those numbers matter. More demand means more pressure on capacity, punctuality and emissions. Any tool that saves fuel while keeping aircraft moving earns its place. The old industry habit was to add more: more desks, more halls, more manual checking. The new discipline is to extract more performance from the assets already in play.

On the airport floor, SITA says AI-driven Total Airport Management tools at Toronto Pearson and Abu Dhabi Airports are recovering minutes per aircraft turnaround. A minute can sound modest until it is multiplied across gates, aircraft rotations and peak travel periods. In aviation, a saved minute is not a rounding error. It is often the difference between a tidy schedule and a domino set.

Baggage, that ancient source of airport melodrama, is also getting a sharper brain. At Thai Airways, AI-driven routing through SITA WorldTracer Auto Reflight automatically rebooks mishandled bags onto the next viable flight. SITA says the process cuts reconciliation from three minutes to one second. That does not make a missing suitcase charming, but it may stop it from becoming a saga.

The baggage claim extends further. SITA says airlines participating in its partnership with Apple, now joined by Google, have seen truly lost bags fall by 90 per cent for Apple AirTag-equipped bags when location sharing is used through SITA WorldTracer. That distinction matters. It is not a claim that all lost luggage everywhere has fallen by 90 per cent. It is a specific result for tracked bags using that location-sharing process.

The report also points to resilience when disruption hits. In a 2025 proof of concept at France’s Reims Control Centre, air navigation service provider DSNA gave controllers the same live weather picture that pilots and dispatchers already use. SITA says weather-driven delays were cut by up to 65 per cent, saving up to 105,000 delay minutes across 21 weather-affected days.

The CrowdStrike outage reference also needs precision. SITA’s public release refers to the 2024 CrowdStrike outage, during which more than 460 flights kept running on SITA Maestro DCS. That is the cleaner, safer wording for publication than “last year’s” outage, which can date badly and confuse readers.

At Hajj 2025, SITA says its around-the-clock operational support and automated incident management kept airline and airport systems running with zero downtime and zero major incidents. For an event of that scale, that is not merely an IT boast. It is the sort of operational steadiness that keeps people moving when pressure is at its highest.

SITA’s financial and sustainability figures lend further weight to the report. Revenue grew 7 per cent to US$1.71 billion in 2025, while the company invested US$93 million in research and development. Its carbon footprint has fallen 32 per cent against a 2019 base year, including 1.3 per cent in 2025, and renewable electricity use across SITA offices has reached 90 per cent.

The public release also notes SITA’s board leadership for its next chapter. At the Annual General Assembly in Brussels on 17 June 2026, shareholders reappointed Dr Omar Jefri as Chair of the SITA Board of Directors for a further three-year term and approved the appointment of Suhail Kamil Kadri, CIO of Qatar Airways Group, as a new director.

For the travel trade, the lesson is plain. The next era of aviation will not be won only by bigger terminals or longer runways, valuable as both remain. It will be won by the operators that make borders quicker, flights cleaner, baggage smarter, and disruption less ruinous.

Passengers may not notice the platform architecture, the digital twin or the risk-assessment engine. Nor should they have to. The best travel technology does its job quietly. It makes the queue shorter, the aircraft punctual, the bag less adventurous, and the journey feel almost old-fashioned in the best sense: orderly, reliable and run by people who know what they are doing.
