If there’s one thing Australians appreciate almost as much as an upgrade, it’s getting something for absolutely nothing.

Recognising this timeless truth, Emirates has launched a summer campaign offering travellers complimentary stays at Dubai’s towering five-star JW Marriott Marquis, effectively turning what was once an airport stopover into a mini-holiday complete with rooftop cocktails, spa treatments and perhaps just enough retail therapy to test the limits of the credit card.

And let’s be honest: spending an extra day beside a hotel pool in Dubai beats spending six hours wandering around duty-free trying to justify another Toblerone purchase.

The Dubai-based carrier is rolling out the offer for passengers travelling to or through Dubai this northern summer, giving Australians heading for Europe, the UK and beyond another reason to break their journey in the Middle East.

The promotion comes as airlines continue to battle fiercely for premium long-haul travellers, particularly Australians, who remain enthusiastic travellers despite persistent cost-of-living pressures.

Emirates Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer Adnan Kazim said Dubai remains a destination capable of delivering something for every traveller.

“Whether visitors are seeking relaxation, adventure, entertainment or a combination of all three, Dubai is the ideal start to any summer vacation. We’re inviting passengers to enjoy even more of the city with a complimentary hotel stay to take advantage of the exceptional range of shopping, entertainment, dining and family-friendly experiences that define the Dubai summer experience, when stopping over as part of your journey or visiting Dubai as your final destination.”

The centrepiece of the campaign is a complimentary stay at the iconic five-star JW Marriott Marquis Dubai, still one of the city’s most recognisable hotels and, importantly, conveniently positioned for visitors keen to squeeze every possible experience into a short stopover.

Guests can indulge in award-winning restaurants, unwind at the Saray Spa, work out at BodyBase’s reformer studio, or simply float in the outdoor pool, admiring a skyline that seems to sprout another skyscraper every other Tuesday.

Under the offer, customers purchasing Emirates return fares between 22 June and 12 July can enjoy the free accommodation when travelling between 25 June and 30 September.

First and Business Class passengers receive a complimentary two-night stay, while Premium Economy and Economy passengers are offered one complimentary night.

The deal applies to customers either holidaying in Dubai or stopping over for more than 24 hours.

For travel advisors, the offer arrives at a particularly opportune moment.

Dubai has spent years repositioning itself from being merely a transit point to becoming a destination in its own right. Judging by visitor numbers, the strategy is working.

Today, travellers are increasingly choosing to split long journeys, particularly flights to Europe, into manageable sectors. A couple of nights in Dubai offer travellers a chance to adjust to the time zone, enjoy a city break, and begin their holiday before arriving at their final destination.

Emirates is also encouraging visitors to make the most of their time through its Dubai Experience platform, which provides tailored 24- and 48-hour itineraries designed around individual interests.

Whether it’s scaling the heights of the Burj Khalifa, disappearing into Dubai’s ever-expanding museum scene, seeking refuge in one of the city’s famously air-conditioned shopping centres, or introducing the children to one of Dubai’s many theme parks, there is certainly no shortage of things to do.

Then there is the ever-popular My Emirates Pass, returning for Summer 2026 with more than 600 offers across restaurants, spas, attractions and retail outlets.

For travellers, it effectively turns an airline boarding pass into a discount voucher booklet, although thankfully without the weight and clutter that once bulged from every travel agent’s desk drawer.

Adding further appeal, the annual Dubai Summer Surprises festival runs from 2 July until 30 August, bringing major retail promotions, concerts, wellness activities and family entertainment across the city.

For Australians, access remains extensive.

Emirates currently operates twice-daily services from Sydney and Melbourne, alongside daily flights from Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, providing 49 weekly services between Australia and Dubai and onward connectivity to more than 138 destinations worldwide.

In a market where value increasingly drives booking decisions, free luxury accommodation is likely to resonate strongly.

After all, “free” remains one of the travel industry’s most powerful four-letter words.

More information and bookings are available through Emirates’ website, the Emirates App, Emirates retail stores, contact centres and accredited travel advisors.

Half American, half Asian, he grew up around the quiet workings of tourism, where people come and go, and stories rarely stand still.
Bangkok came first, then formal study, then a career that carried him through Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam. Each place left something behind. In the end, Thailand felt like home, and I took on a senior role in hotel sales.
Then everything stopped. Borders shut, planes grounded, and Jason found himself back in America with time to reflect.
Now at Global Travel Media, he writes travel as it really is, not polished, not perfect, but human, and all the better for it.
