Following the vibrant Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations in April, Sri Lanka continues its remarkable season of cultural festivities, where ancient rituals, religious devotion, colourful festivals and community spirit unfold across the island. From June through October, Buddhist, Hindu and multicultural celebrations offer travellers a deeper connection to Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage, before giving way to the Christmas and New Year season that extends the spirit of celebration through the end of the year. Perfectly positioned across some of the island’s most iconic landscapes, Resplendent Ceylon’s collection of luxury properties offers an exceptional base from which to experience these timeless traditions firsthand.
June: Poson
Poson Poya, celebrated nationwide in June, marks the arrival of Buddhism to Sri Lanka more than 2,000 years ago through the mission of Arahat Mahinda. The sacred city of Mihintale becomes the heart of pilgrimage, drawing thousands of white-clad devotees to its ancient rock temple. Across the country, the atmosphere is one of generous spirit and quiet reflection, dansals, traditional free-food stalls, welcoming all who pass, regardless of faith or background. Where Vesak dazzles, Poson moves. It is among the most profound cultural experiences Sri Lanka offers.
July: Esala Perahera Begins
As July unfolds, the hill capital of Kandy stirs with anticipation for one of Asia’s grandest cultural spectacles. Weeks of temple rituals and ceremonial rehearsals set the stage for the Esala Perahera, building an atmosphere of reverence and excitement that suffuses the city long before the procession itself begins.
August: Kandy Esala Perahera & Nallur Festival
August is perhaps the most spectacular month in Sri Lanka’s cultural calendar. In Kandy, the Esala Perahera reaches its magnificent crescendo: streets fill with ornately adorned elephants, fire dancers, drummers, whip crackers, and costumed performers in a centuries-old procession honouring the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha. For guests at Ceylon Tea Trails, Resplendent Ceylon’s celebrated bungalow retreat in the highlands, Kandy is within reach, offering a convenient getaway away from the rush while providing convenient access to the grandeur and spectacle of the Kandy Esala Perahera.
Simultaneously, in the northern city of Jaffna, the Nallur Festival draws devotees to the historic Nallur Kandaswamy Temple for nearly a month of prayer, traditional music, colour, and profound acts of devotion.
September: Kataragama Festival
September brings one of Sri Lanka’s most fascinating and deeply immersive multi-faith festivals to the southern sacred city of Kataragama. Honouring God Kataragama, this extraordinary gathering draws Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and indigenous Vedda communities together in a rare confluence of faith and tradition. Pilgrims undertake remarkable acts of devotion, ancient rituals unfold late into the night, and the atmosphere is charged with an intensity that is unlike anywhere else in the world. Wild Coast Tented Lodge, Resplendent Ceylon’s extraordinary camp on the edge of Yala National Park, is ideally positioned to accompany guests on a journey to Kataragama in just an hour’s time, for a deep culturally fulfilling experience.
October: Deepavali
The season draws to a glowing close with Deepavali, the Hindu festival of lights, celebrated by Tamil communities across the island in October. Oil lamps illuminate doorways and windowsills as a symbol of light’s triumph over darkness and good over evil. Families gather for prayer, sweets are shared between neighbours, and temples come alive in colour and devotion. It is a beautiful and resonant expression of Sri Lanka’s extraordinary multicultural identity , and a deeply moving way to conclude a year of celebration
