One of the most dynamic neighbourhoods in Athens, Psyrri is a favourite among hip visitors seeking Bohemian style and relaxed vibes, with shops, cafés, bars, and restaurants that imbue the area with its cool reputation.  In contrast to busy Syntagma, where crowds and traffic can seem at times just a bit frantic, the streets of Psyrri (spelling varies in English) are dominated by pedestrians rather than vehicles.  This makes the neighbourhood a very pleasant place to wander.

Although there appears to be a preponderance of guest apartments in Psyrri that are bookable online with little on-the-ground staff support, there are comparatively few quality hotels in the area.  The Foundry offers the comfort and privacy of an apartment with the services of a hotel.  As its name implies, The Foundry is a former foundry, tastefully reincarnated as an industrial-chic place to stay for short or long visits to the vibrant Greek capital.  With only 12 suites, each with its own kitchen, The Foundry is a perfect place to call home when in Athens.  Interiors have been designed in high style without forgetting practicality.  Large, multipaned windows let in an abundance of light and are opened and closed by turning old-fashioned wheels.  The peaceful indoor personal space is complemented by a lovely outdoor area; the rooftop terrace offers a beautiful view of the Acropolis, especially dazzling at night.

Every suite in The Foundry is unique in character.  Some of the duplex suites have the bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs above the double-height living rooms; others are more the style of large junior suites, also with complete kitchens discreetly integrated into the space.  There is no restaurant on the premises, but breakfast is ordered from a local café and served right in the suite.  This being Greece, breakfast options are wide and varied, including the requisite Greek yogurt (the best, creamiest ever) along with innovative twists on standard morning foods like eggs, smoothies, and cakes.  Vegetarians and vegans are well catered for, so they can start their day feeling they have not been overlooked.

The little details at The Foundry make a deep impression, demonstrating the thought and consideration given to guest comfort and enjoyment.  High-quality toiletries by Greek company Zealots Of Nature encourage guests to look forward to their showers after a day of sightseeing.  Music lovers will be happy playing music from the hotel’s vinyl album collection on state-of-the-art Marshall turntables.  The friendly staff at the front desk are happy to assist in every way possible to make the guest experience as memorable as possible.

The Foundry is well located for exploration beyond Psyrri.  Monastiraki Square is just a few minutes’ walk away, with the Acropolis just beyond.  Also, nearby is the famous Varvakios Central Municipal Market, where locals buy fresh meats, fish, and produce.  The Market is on Athinas Street, just north of Evripidou Street, where the intoxicating aromas of exotic spices waft from large sacks on display in the shops.

Syntagma is a bit farther along Ermou Street, but a one-block detour south onto Mitropoleos Street will allow a stop at the interesting Maria Callas Museum, a worthwhile way to learn more about Greece’s opera heroine.  At Syntagma Square, see the changing of the guard at the Parliament building or visit the extensive collections of the Benaki Museum Of Greek Culture a few blocks away.  It is unnecessary, though, to leave Psyrri to have a good time; a meander along the pedestrianised streets delivers a thoroughly rewarding stay in Athens.
