Spread the love

This June and July, Eaton HK presents “Re-membering — Touch Across Time,” a two-month program of exhibitions, performances, screenings, workshops, parties, and community gatherings exploring queer memory, history, and belonging.

Inspired by the work of queer theorist Carolyn Dinshaw, this year’s theme reflects on the connections between past and present queer communities, examining how histories are preserved not only through official records, but through nightlife, personal photographs, zines, radio, performance, and other forms of collective memory.

Through the idea of “Re-membering,” Eaton HK reflects on how queer histories have often been fragmented or erased from traditional archives, while celebrating the communities, relationships, and cultural spaces that continue to keep these histories alive.

Bringing together artists, grassroots organizations, and cultural practitioners from Hong Kong, Mainland China, the U.S., the U.K., France, Switzerland, South Korea, India, and La Réunion, this year’s program transforms Eaton HK into a living archive of queer creativity and intimacy.

Independent queer zines showing in Offline Memories Hong Kong LGBTQ+ Archive of Printed Matter from the Pre-Internet Era

Independent queer zines showing in Offline Memories Hong Kong LGBTQ+ Archive of Printed Matter from the Pre-Internet Era

Drawing from the Hong Kong LGBTQ+ Archive of Printed Matter from the Pre-Internet Era, this exhibition revisits the overlooked histories of Hong Kong’s queer communities through newsletters, indie zines, handwritten letters, AIDS education leaflets, event promotions, and other rare ephemera from the 1980s to the early 2000s. Bringing together eight queer and trans artists across generations, the exhibition engages with the archive not simply as a record of the past, but as a living resource for future queer memory and dialogue. Through video art, installation, sculpture, photography, poetry, and mixed media, the exhibition explores how queer histories can be reimagined, reinterpreted, and woven into new visions of queer futurity across time.
