The state’s top accommodation body has received a NSW Government grant aimed at helping members reduce food waste and implement new recycling measures as new requirements come into effect from 1 July 2026.

Accommodation Australia NSW is one of several organisations to receive funding under the NSW Government’s Business Food Waste Partnerships Grants Program, announced last week as part of a $10 million investment in new projects to save around 1,500 tonnes of waste from landfill every year.

The funding will support accommodation businesses as they prepare for the rollout of Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) requirements, which will also see the equivalent of three million extra meals re-directed to communities in need.

“Sustainability is something our members – and their customers – already take very seriously,” Ms McBride said.

“Hotels play a key role in reducing and managing food waste, and this funding helps support the work already happening across the industry

“From July there will be new systems, processes and staff training in place in some venues, especially those with a food and beverage focus, and we welcome the Minns Government grant to aid education and ease of implementation.

“AA will be working closely with Edge Impact, member hotels, industry and the NSW Environment Protection Authority over the coming weeks as the new state-wide initiatives are implemented.

AA NSW food waste education initiatives include a special webinar AA NSW will be holding for members on 13 May.
