There’s something gloriously old-school about launching the bow of a ship into the water for the first time. Steel meets sea, executives smile politely for photographers, and somewhere in the background, an Italian shipbuilder quietly mutters: “Now the real work begins.”

That proud maritime ritual unfolded this week in Sicily as luxury lifestyle ocean brand Explora Journeys celebrated a significant construction milestone for EXPLORA V, the fifth ultra-luxury vessel in the company’s rapidly expanding fleet.

The bow section, known in shipbuilding circles as the “Troncone”, was successfully launched at the famed Palermo shipyard operated by Italian shipbuilding heavyweight Fincantieri. It marks the moment the giant structure touches water for the first time before heading north to Genoa for final assembly.

For Explora Journeys, however, this was far more than another ceremonial splash into the Mediterranean.

It was another unmistakable signal that the luxury cruise race is accelerating, and Explora intends to sail near the front of the flotilla.

The future EXPLORA V, due for delivery in 2027, forms part of the ambitious six-ship vision from the Cruise Division of MSC Group, which has invested more than €3.5 billion into the Explora Journeys concept alone.

That figure rises to roughly €7 billion when combined with previous MSC Cruises vessels built by Fincantieri, enough money to make even seasoned cruise accountants reach for the antacids.

Still, luxury cruising has become one of tourism’s hottest battlegrounds, and Explora Journeys is betting heavily that affluent travellers increasingly want space, sophistication and slower, more meaningful ocean experiences rather than floating theme parks with queues longer than airport immigration.

Anna Nash, President of Explora Journeys, said the launch represented another important step in the fleet’s evolution.

“We are pleased to mark the launch of the bow section of EXPLORA V, an important milestone in the continued development of our fleet,” Nash said.

“As we grow, we are introducing more guests to a new expression of ocean travel. We now look ahead to the delivery of EXPLORA III this July and her inaugural journeys, from the Mediterranean to Northern Europe, Iceland and Greenland.”

The company’s carefully choreographed growth strategy is gathering momentum quickly.

EXPLORA I entered service in August 2023, officially launching the brand into the fiercely competitive premium cruise sector.

EXPLORA II followed in September 2024, while EXPLORA III is preparing for her inaugural season in July 2026.

Then comes the real fleet surge.

EXPLORA IV and EXPLORA V are both scheduled for delivery in 2027, followed by EXPLORA VI in 2028.

Importantly, all upcoming vessels from EXPLORA III onward will operate using liquefied natural gas (LNG), reinforcing the company’s long-term sustainability ambitions.

In cruise industry language, LNG has become the equivalent of arriving at a black-tie dinner in a hybrid Bentley luxury with a cleaner conscience.

Explora Journeys says the investment forms part of its commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across marine operations by 2050, alongside the continued adoption of advanced environmental technologies.

That environmental focus matters.

Today’s luxury travellers increasingly expect premium operators to demonstrate serious sustainability credentials alongside polished marble bathrooms and oceanfront suites the size of city apartments.

The partnership with Fincantieri also underscores the enduring strength of Italian shipbuilding craftsmanship, a tradition dating back centuries and still regarded among the finest in global maritime construction.

Each Explora vessel reportedly requires more than 7 million work hours and supports approximately 2,500 jobs during construction over a 2- to 3-year period.

That is not merely shipbuilding.

That is industrial choreography on a staggering scale.

And while cruise operators worldwide continue chasing bigger ships, louder entertainment and increasingly extravagant onboard gimmicks, Explora Journeys appears determined to position itself differently, quieter luxury, refined design and what it describes as an “Ocean State of Mind.”

Translation? Fewer belly-flop competitions. More champagne at sunset.

In the travel sector, where premium experiences continue to outperform broader tourism growth, the timing may prove astute.

Affluent travellers remain willing to spend heavily on immersive, high-end journeys, particularly when privacy, wellness and exclusivity are high on the itinerary.

For Explora Journeys, EXPLORA V’s first encounter with water may have lasted only moments.

But strategically, it represents another deep-water step into the future of luxury cruising.

And judging by the scale of investment already floating through Italian shipyards, this voyage is only just leaving the harbour.
