Spread the love

When it comes to Mother’s Day gifts, it appears the humble scented candle and last-minute florist bouquet may finally be losing ground to something with considerably more sea breeze and significantly fewer petals.

Fresh research from the Tourism & Transport Forum has revealed that a staggering 78 per cent of Australian mums would rather receive a holiday or staycation this Mother’s Day than traditional gifts, proving once and for all that “me time” has become the new luxury currency.

And frankly, who could blame them?

After years of juggling work, family logistics, school lunches, sports carnivals, forgotten homework and the occasional emotional meltdown from grown adults masquerading as husbands, many mums are apparently eyeing the horizon and quietly whispering, “Get me on a ship.”

Enter Carnival Cruise Line Australia, which has cleverly positioned cruising as the perfect no-fuss, great-value escape for time-poor Australian families looking to spoil mum without requiring a second mortgage.

The research paints a fascinating picture of what mothers really want in 2026. Around one in five mums are dreaming of a solo getaway, while others are eager for quality time with friends, partners or children. More than half surveyed said a family holiday would top their wish list this year.

Carnival says there is still time for Australians to secure a last-minute getaway, with short cruise itineraries departing from both Sydney and Brisbane offering convenient options for busy families.

Among the standout sailings are the three-day Sydney getaway and a four-day Airlie Beach cruise from Brisbane, ideal for mums needing a circuit breaker before winter fully settles in.

Longer voyages are also attracting strong interest, particularly Carnival’s nine- and 10-day South Pacific cruises to Vanuatu and New Caledonia aboard the Carnival Adventure, with fares starting from under $100 per person, per day.

Carnival recently doubled down on the Mother’s Day sentiment, hosting 15 mothers and their families aboard Carnival Adventure for a special early celebration cruise.

“From the moment we stepped on board Carnival Adventure, it felt like the ultimate Mother’s Day escape,” said Despina Notaras, who attended alongside her daughter Evangeline.

“We met some incredible mums, made beautiful memories, and now we’re already dreaming about our next cruise.”

Carnival’s Assistant Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Anton Loeb, said Australians were increasingly turning to cruising as an affordable and stress-free gift option.

“Sailing from Sydney and Brisbane year-round, Carnival offers great value winter getaways that make a perfect gift to show mums how loved and appreciated they are,” Loeb said.

And there it is, the modern Mother’s Day equation. Fewer pot plants. More passports. Less bathrobe. More boarding passes.

About the Author.
Bridget Gomez - Bio PicBridget has never been built for stillness. Of Portuguese heritage, she began as a nurse, tending veterans at the Repatriation Hospital, listening to stories as colourful as the life she was yet to live. It was worthy, steady work, but wanderlust, as always, proved louder than routine.
So, she traded starch for a backpack and disappeared for a year, chasing trains, sunsets and the occasional regrettable glass of wine. She wrote everything down: the dust, the laughter, the missteps, the magic. Those notebooks became a travel blog, then a habit, then a calling.
Eventually, she found Global Travel Media, or perhaps it found her.
Today, Bridget writes with heart, humour and a dash of mischief, still travelling, just now with words.
