Saffire Freycinet, one of Australia’s leading luxury lodges is launching Saffire After Dark, an intimate stargazing encounter to its collection of Signature Experiences. Guests of Saffire are invited to discover the wonders of Tasmania’s night sky through a thoughtfully hosted one-hour astronomy journey.
Set against the untouched beauty of Tasmania’s east coast, Saffire After Dark blends tactile elements with rare meteorites, and evocative astrophysical storytelling. Thoughtfully layered with hospitality-led comfort, the fireside setting combines a purpose-built outdoor viewing platform and high powered Celestron telescopes and Pegasus Smart Eye device for detailed viewing, creating awe-inspiring moments beneath the cosmos.
Saffire After Dark is designed to appeal to both astronomy enthusiasts and the gently curious. Guests are invited to pause in the stillness beneath the southern night sky, evoking a refined sense of wonder, serenity and connection to the universe.
The experience will run on a seasonal schedule to ensure optimal viewing conditions. During the cooler months (May-September), guests can choose between a pre– or post-dinner session, with exceptional clarity, peak Milky Way visibility and potential Aurora sightings. During the warmer months (October–April), a single post-dinner session invites guests to enjoy the balmy evenings while discovering the ever-evolving seasonal constellations.
“Tasmania offers some of the clearest night skies in the world,” said Dylan Counsel, General Manager of Saffire Freycinet. “Winter, in particular, presents a rare opportunity to truly embrace the darkness. Saffire After Dark allows our guests to connect with that natural wonder in a way that feels thoughtful and deeply personal. It’s about creating a moment of awe that stays with you long after the evening ends.”
Saffire After Dark guides guests along a softly-lit pathway to a sunken amphitheatre, where qualified astronomer guides identify key constellations and southern sky orientation. Through high-powered telescopes, guests discover the life cycle of a star from nebulae and star clusters to globular clusters, galaxies and supernovas. The journey concludes with reflective storytelling that gently returns the experience to earth, allowing guests to interact with rare meteorites and cosmic artefacts including an 8.4kg Boxhole meteorite discovered near Alice Springs in 1973, and a Tissint Mars meteorite that fell to earth in Morocco in 2011. As a lasting memento, guests receive a curated digital collection featuring telescopic imagery captured on the night, a bespoke Saffire celestial chart, and six-month stargazing guide.
The experience is thoughtfully designed for couples, families, and international visitors seeking to enjoy Tasmania’s renowned dark skies and southern orientation. Wheelchair-friendly pathways, adjustable telescopes, and tablet-based viewing options ensure an inclusive and seamless celestial experience for all Saffire Freycinet guests.
Saffire After Dark is one of Saffire’s Signature Experiences, a complimentary, all-inclusive activity for guests staying at Saffire. Other Signature Experiences include the Marine Farm Oyster experience, Connection to Country, Bee Keeping, and the Tasmanian Devils Sanctuary encounter.
