Japan has been named the world’s most sought-after trekking destination, according to new global research from World Expeditions, with its ancient pilgrimage routes capturing the imagination of travellers across four continents.

The inaugural World’s Best Treks Survey, conducted by World Expeditions, collected 13,453 destination preferences from 11,952 participants across Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and North America. Japan ranked #1 overall with 2,107 votes, ahead of Nepal (1,949) and Patagonia (1,858).

“Japan has quietly become one of the great trekking destinations of our time,” said Sue Badyari, CEO of World Expeditions.

“Routes such as the Kumano Kodo, the Nakasendo Way and the Shikoku pilgrimage offer a rare combination of deep cultural and spiritual heritage, accessible yet rewarding walking routes and well-developed trail networks and accommodation. This data confirms that trekkers worldwide have discovered what we’ve known for years; Japan is best experienced on foot.”

The findings of the survey reveal the top 5 trekking destinations for 2026 are:

1.    Japan — 2,107 votes

2.    Nepal — 1,949 votes

3.    Patagonia — 1,858 votes

4.    Inca Trail (Peru) — 1,340 votes

5.    Bhutan — 1,237 votes

Key insights from the survey include:

·      Japan ranked #1 in Australia and New Zealand and was the only destination to rank in the top three across all four regions.

·      Nepal ranked #1 in the UK, reflecting this region’s strong tradition of Himalayan trekking

·      North American travellers favoured Patagonia

·      The Inca Trail ranked consistently across all markets, placing fourth in each

·      Bhutan performed strongly among experienced trekking audiences

“What’s striking is that every region has its own trekking dream,” said Badyari. “Japan for Asia-Pacific, Nepal for Europe and Patagonia for the Americas. The world is walking, and interest in immersive, active travel continues to grow.”
