Tonga Tourism Authority has welcomed news of a landmark new tourism investment by New Zealand-based Sudima Hotels and Hind Management, with plans announced for a new upscale hotel, resort and convention centre in Tonga. The project has been described in current reporting as a significant step forward for the Kingdom’s tourism infrastructure and wider economic development.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed with His Majesty King Tupou VI during the recent visit to Tonga by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, underscoring the strength of the relationship between Tonga and New Zealand and growing confidence in Tonga’s long-term tourism potential.
The planned development, to be located at the Parliament Precinct, is expected to help address increasing demand for high-quality accommodation and event infrastructure in Tonga, while also strengthening the Kingdom’s ability to attract international visitors, business events and major gatherings.
According to current reports, the project is expected to create up to 100 permanent and part-time jobs and contribute approximately T$18 million annually to the local economy through wages and procurement, while also acting as a catalyst for further investment in the destination.
For the Australian and New Zealand travel trade, the announcement sends a strong signal that Tonga is continuing to build momentum as an increasingly attractive destination for both leisure and business travel.
“This is an important vote of confidence in Tonga’s tourism future,” said Richard Skewes, Australia and New Zealand Representative for the Tonga Tourism Authority.
“Trade partners in Australia and New Zealand are always looking for destinations with fresh stories, growing confidence and a clear sense of direction. This announcement demonstrates that respected regional investors can see the long-term opportunity in Tonga, not only as a beautiful leisure destination, but also as a place with growing potential for events, conferences and higher-yield visitation.”
“Tonga already offers travellers something genuinely distinctive in the South Pacific — rich culture, authenticity, strong community values and memorable natural experiences. New investment of this calibre helps strengthen the destination’s appeal even further and gives the trade added confidence in selling Tonga.”
The announcement comes at a time when Tonga Tourism Authority is continuing to increase its engagement with the travel trade across Australia and New Zealand through training, marketing activity and industry partnerships, aimed at growing awareness of the destination and improving product knowledge among frontline sellers.
For wholesalers, product managers and retail travel advisors, the planned development is also a positive sign of broader tourism confidence in Tonga, particularly as the Kingdom continues to position itself for sustainable long-term growth. With demand for authentic, less crowded and culturally rich Pacific destinations continuing to rise, Tonga is well placed to appeal to travellers seeking something genuinely different.
