Airlines have a habit of dressing up sales as “opportunities”. This one, to be fair, actually is.

Vietjet Air has dropped a rather substantial 11 million discounted seats onto the market just as Australians begin eyeing the calendar and realising, once again, that winter is not a season so much as an endurance test.

The pitch is simple. Up to 20 per cent off Business, SkyBoss and Deluxe fares (taxes and fees, naturally, remain stubbornly immune), covering the airline’s network, including those increasingly well-trodden routes from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth into Ho Chi Minh City.

Bookings are open until the small hours of 2:59 am AEST on 1 May 2026 for those who either plan ahead or panic at the last minute. The travel runs through 31 August, which neatly captures the heart of Australia’s colder months. Enter promo code VJ20 via the airline’s official site (https://www.vietjetair.com) or app, and you’re in business.

Good timing beats clever marketing

If this all feels well-timed, that’s because it is.

Vietnam is heading into one of its busiest travel windows, with Hung Kings Commemoration Day, Reunification Day and Labour Day falling in quick succession. These are not token public holidays; they move people, and lots of them.

Vietjet says it will operate close to 3,800 domestic flights between 25 April and 5 May to keep pace. Expect extra services across the usual suspects: Hanoi, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Hue, Phu Quoc and a handful of others that have quietly become mainstays rather than emerging destinations.

For Australians, it’s a tidy alignment. While we’re layering up, Vietnam is humming with warm evenings, crowded markets, and the sort of street-side dining that makes you forget what time it is, let alone what season.

A touch of theatre never hurt

In a nod to old-school airline showmanship, Vietjet has bolted on a promotion with a bit of sparkle literally.

Book through its official channels and you’re automatically entered into the “Fly Vietjet, strike gold” draw (details here: https://www.vietjetair.com/en/fly-vietjet-strike-gold). The headline prize is a bar of gold weighing about 1.2 ounces.

It’s not life-changing wealth, but it’s a charming throwback to when airlines tried to entertain as much as they tried to sell. There are also smaller prizes, gold, silver, and future travel vouchers if bullion isn’t your thing.

The bigger play

Strip away the marketing gloss, and this is really about positioning.

Vietjet continues to press its advantage as a low-cost bridge between Australia and Southeast Asia, leaning on a young fleet and a product that, while firmly budget, knows how to nod politely to comfort and culture.

Vietnam, for its part, has matured into a destination that doesn’t need much explaining. It offers value, variety, and just enough unpredictability to keep things interesting, three traits that resonate strongly with Australian travellers.

And so the equation writes itself. A well-timed sale, a reliable winter escape, and a destination that delivers more often than not.

No grand reinvention here, just a good, honest airfare deal. Sometimes, that’s more than enough.
