There’s something reassuring about a hotel group that knows when to call in experience.
Dusit International has done exactly that, appointing Marc Handl as Managing Director of its newly reborn Dusit Thani Bangkok and, just to keep him busy, handing him the keys to its upcoming residential play within Dusit Central Park.
It’s a decisive move. And frankly, a necessary one.
Because while the rebuilt Dusit Thani has returned to Bangkok’s skyline with a fair bit of polish and not a little nostalgia, the real challenge isn’t reopening. It’s staying relevant in a city that reinvents luxury faster than most airlines reinvent their business class.
A flagship with history and expectations
Overlooking Lumpini Park, the new-look Dusit Thani Bangkok carries the weight of its past rather elegantly. The original was something of an institution. The new version? Sleeker, sharper, and clearly designed with a global audience in mind.
Early signs suggest it’s working.
A Michelin Key for the hotel and a Michelin Star for its signature restaurant aren’t handed out for nostalgia. They’re earned. And in Bangkok, a city not exactly short on world-class dining and design, that counts for something.
Still, awards are one thing. Sustained performance is another. That’s where Handl comes in.
Not his first rodeo
Handl isn’t a gamble. He’s a calculated bet.
Three decades across brands like Park Hyatt, The Ritz-Carlton, Aman and Rosewood Hotels & Resorts tends to sharpen one’s instincts. Add in recent oversight of a 15-property, multi-brand portfolio in Abu Dhabi, and you’ve got someone who understands both the art and arithmetic of luxury hospitality.
He started in food and beverage, a detail worth noting. The best operators often do. They understand that luxury isn’t just thread count and marble bathrooms. It’s how things feel, taste, and flow.
More than just rooms with a view
What makes this appointment interesting is its scope.
Handl isn’t just running a hotel. He’s steering a mixed-use ecosystem hotel, residences, retail, office space, and a rooftop park thrown in for good measure. It’s the kind of development that cities like Bangkok are leaning into: everything in one place, all carefully branded, all expected to perform.
Dusit Residences and Dusit Parkside, both under his watch, reflect two sides of the same coin. One leans into classic, heritage-led luxury. The other feels more contemporary, more lifestyle-driven. Together, they’re designed to capture a broader slice of the high-end market.
And yes, they’re expected to make money. Quite a bit of it, if the early optimism holds.
The man himself
Handl sounds exactly as you’d expect: measured, respectful, and quietly ambitious.
“Bangkok has long been a city I’ve aspired to work in, so it’s a real privilege to join Dusit and take on this role at such an important time for the business,” he said.
“Dusit Thani Bangkok has a strong legacy, rooted in heritage and a clear sense of identity, and I look forward to working with the team to continue building its international profile while staying true to what makes Thai hospitality so distinctive. I’m also excited to be leading Dusit Residences and Dusit Parkside as they prepare to welcome their first residents and establish themselves among the city’s most distinctive new addresses.”
No fluff. No corporate theatre. Just a clear understanding of what’s at stake.
Why this matters
Bangkok doesn’t hand out loyalty easily. It’s a market where global brands arrive with fanfare and quietly disappear if they misread the room.
Dusit, to its credit, isn’t trying to outdo the internationals by copying them. Its strength has always been its sense of place, Thai hospitality delivered with confidence, not compromise.
Handl’s task is to take that identity and make sure it travels. Not literally, but in reputation. To ensure that when someone in London, New York or Sydney thinks of Bangkok luxury, Dusit is part of the conversation again.
That’s no small brief.
But then again, neither is this project.
