Bangkok has never been shy about hosting a good gathering. From spirited street markets to global summits, the Thai capital knows how to bring people together. Now, it’s preparing to welcome something rather more strategic and potentially transformative with the arrival of IBTM Asia Pacific in June 2027.
Set to take place at the Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Centre (BITEC) from 9–10 June, the new event marks a deliberate and confident expansion by IBTM into one of the world’s fastest-moving business events markets.
And make no mistake, this is no tentative toe in the water. It’s a full-bodied dive.
A Region on the Rise and Worth the Attention
Asia-Pacific’s business events sector is no longer an emerging story; it’s already arrived, and it’s growing at pace. Valued at a tidy US$231.49 billion in 2026, the region is expected to expand at an annual clip of 12.6% through to 2029. Those are not numbers to ignore, particularly if you’re in the business of bringing buyers and sellers together.
IBTM’s decision to anchor a dedicated Asia-Pacific marketplace reflects both timing and demand. Industry feedback has been emphatic: the region wants a platform built specifically for its scale, diversity and ambition.
Matching Minds and Balance Sheets
At the heart of the event lies IBTM’s well-established Hosted Buyer model, a system that replaces the old scattergun approach with something far more surgical. Buyers from the corporate, association, and agency sectors are carefully matched with destinations, venues, hotels, and suppliers.
The objective? Less small talk, more substance.
Smart matchmaking technology ensures meetings are not only scheduled but worthwhile, with a clear focus on outcomes. In an industry increasingly measured by return on investment rather than return on conversion, that distinction matters.
As Claudia Hall, Exhibition Director of IBTM World and IBTM Asia Pacific, puts it:
“We are delighted to be launching a new event for the region, opening the door to a market with immense potential and introducing our proven model to a dynamic region with a strong appetite for growth.
“Our vision is to build the region’s most influential event, offering a premium platform that brings together industry leaders through high-quality meetings, an inspiring conference programme, and measurable commercial impact for both exhibitors and buyers.”
Measured words, certainly, but ones that carry weight given IBTM’s track record.
Bangkok: A Host That Knows Its Role
If you were designing a host city for such an event, you might well end up with something resembling Bangkok. Connectivity? Excellent. Hotel capacity? Extensive. Venues? World-class. Add in visa-friendly access for travellers from key markets including China, India, Europe, the UK and the United States, and the case becomes rather compelling.
Backing from the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) further strengthens the proposition. The organisation has made no secret of its ambition to position Thailand as a regional MICE powerhouse.
Mrs Supawan Teerarat, PhD, President of TCEB, said:
“Thailand is honoured to welcome IBTM Asia Pacific 2027 and global MICE partners to Bangkok. This landmark event is more than a regional gathering. It is a bold statement of Asia’s rising influence in the global business events industry. As the Official Host Destination Partner, the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau looks forward to working closely with RX BITEC to create a dynamic platform that connects the international business events community while showcasing Thailand’s world-class capabilities and inspiring experiences.”
There’s a certain quiet confidence in that statement and not without reason.
Beyond the Boardroom
IBTM Asia Pacific will not be all spreadsheets and handshakes. The conference programme promises a mix of interactive sessions, practical workshops, collaborative problem-solving and, importantly, wellbeing experiences, a nod to an industry learning that productivity and people are not mutually exclusive.
And, as tradition dictates, there will be a Welcome Party. Because in this business, relationships are built just as much over a shared drink as at a meeting table.
The Bigger Picture
The launch of IBTM Asia Pacific is less about adding another date to the calendar and more about recognising where the centre of gravity is shifting. The global business events industry is tilting east, not abruptly, but steadily and unmistakably.
Bangkok, with its blend of infrastructure, accessibility and cultural flair, feels like a natural stage for that next act.
Come June 2027, the conversations will begin. And if IBTM has judged the mood correctly, and history suggests it has, those conversations will lead somewhere rather meaningful.
