Forget flashy and brash, the Carlton is all about discreet quality for those who appreciate that less is sometimes more.
As a regular visitor to Bangkok, I am becoming increasingly familiar with the wide array of options available to both the business and leisure traveller. While I enjoy staying in 5-star properties when offered, I am more attuned to mid-scale and 4-star properties, so it was a delight to be invited to attend the inaugural Best Western Pan APAC conference at the plush, relatively new Carlton Hotel on Sukhumvit.

The Carlton, while maintaining its independence through an enviable reputation of quality service standards, joined Best Western Hotels’ WordHotels brand from inception in 2019. WorldHotels was acquired by BWH at the same time, adding 300 luxury properties to its enormous global portfolio.
Even the occasional visitor to Bangkok will know luxury (and upper upscale in industry parlance) hospitality is both abundant and fiercely competitive. As such, the Carlton Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit distinguishes itself with a measured, quietly confident approach. Positioned between Sukhumvit Soi 21 (Asoke) and Soi 23, the hotel occupies a strategic enclave that places guests within easy reach of Bangkok’s commercial core, yet just far enough removed to maintain a sense of composure above that all-too-familiar urban churn.
As you’d expect from such a property, service throughout is polished, reliable, efficient, courteous, and discreet. A testament to the standards exemplified by long-serving GM and Carlton champion, Mark Bulmer.
The Carlton is also rightfully proud of its culinary program, anchored by Wah Lok, its standout Cantonese restaurant, which has established a rightful reputation as one of the most reliable upscale Chinese dining rooms in this part of Bangkok. Plate on the lower ground floor is the contemporary all-day dining venue, while Plunge, the rooftop pool bar with panoramic city views, serves as both a daytime retreat and an evening social space.
The overall atmosphere leans toward understated luxury—less about spectacle, more about delivering a seamless, dependable stay. I get the distinct feeling that the Carlton is a hotel that prioritises function and comfort over flamboyance.
Public transport is just an easy stroll away, with the hotel located near both the BTS Skytrain (Asoke) and the MRT (Sukhumvit). I managed to lug my cases the short distance from Asoke BTS without too much stress.
Terminal 21, with its eclectic retail concept, is nearby, while the surrounding precinct offers a mix of dining, nightlife and business facilities.

The Carlton Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit may not be designed to compete with the city’s heritage grande dames or ultra-luxury riverfront icons. Instead, it excels in delivering a refined, contemporary stay defined by space, efficiency and consistency.
As such, I consider the Carlton perfect for both business and leisure travellers (or those combining both) who value precision over pageantry; it is one of Sukhumvit’s most dependable 5-star options.
