In a world where luxury is often measured in thread counts and infinity pools, Sweden has quietly upended the definition. Forget champagne on the sundeck. Think silence, pine-scented air and the creak of a wooden jetty at dusk.

In a tourism move that feels both delightfully eccentric and unmistakably Scandinavian, Visit Sweden is inviting travellers to apply for the chance to use one of five Swedish islands for an entire year.

Yes, an island. Yours. For twelve months.

The initiative, aptly titled Your Swedish Island, taps into a simple truth that modern travellers are rediscovering: the rarest luxury today isn’t excess, it’s space. And Sweden, with a staggering 267,570 islands to its name, has space in spades.

According to a recent global YouGov survey, the timing couldn’t be better. A striking 77 per cent of respondents said they would consider visiting a Swedish island, while 44 per cent admitted they’d happily swap crowds for solitude. In Germany and France, one in five confessed they’d even relish a break from their partner, proof, perhaps, that silence really is golden.

At the heart of the campaign is a deliberate rethinking of luxury itself. Rather than gilded villas or private chefs, Sweden is selling something far more elemental: calm, fresh air and restorative nature.

“Sweden has more islands than any other country in the world, and we would like to invite people to enjoy what may be the most genuine form of luxury: the peace and tranquillity of nature on your own island,” said Susanne Andersson, CEO of Visit Sweden.

The islands themselves are carefully selected. Secluded, yes, but not entirely cut off. Each sits within reach of a local community, meaning island custodians can still duck in for groceries, post a letter, or join a traditional Midsummer celebration. It’s Robinson Crusoe, but with Wi-Fi if you really insist.

The campaign is being run in partnership with the National Property Board, and the entry mechanism is refreshingly modern. Hopeful applicants are invited to upload a short video explaining why they deserve the experience. Creativity and personal motivation will guide the jury’s decision, not social media clout or bank balance.

The winners will receive not just bragging rights but a trip to Sweden and the chance to live a year shaped by tides rather than traffic lights.

And if you miss out? Sweden is unfazed.

“If you don’t get one of these islands, don’t worry. Sweden has many more for everyone to enjoy,” Andersson added. “From quiet lakes to open coastlines, there’s an island paradise waiting for one and all.”

It’s a clever piece of destination storytelling. At a time when overtourism continues to plague global hotspots, Sweden is leaning into its natural abundance and inviting travellers to slow down rather than show off.

For tourism marketers worldwide, the message is clear: the future of luxury may well lie in subtraction, not addition.

If nothing else, Sweden has reminded the travel world of a charmingly old-fashioned idea that sometimes the greatest indulgence is simply being left alone with nature, a kettle and a horizon that belongs, if only briefly, entirely to you.

About the Writer.
Anne Keam - Bio PicAnne Keam’s story begins in Queensland, on a grain farm in the state’s wide western reaches, where the days were long and the lessons simple: work hard, look after your own, and don’t make a fuss. Those early years left their mark.
She later studied Arts at the University of Queensland, before doing what felt natural at the time, heading back home to the family property. But the world was calling. Anne packed a backpack and went looking, spending years on the road and finding herself most alive in South America. She wrote everything down along the way. Those notebooks, full of dust, colour and curiosity, eventually became her blog, a quiet, personal record of seeing the world and learning from it.
