Singapore’s first all-villa resort, Raffles Sentosa Singapore, is delighted to announce it has been awarded the Green Globe Certification, a globally recognised benchmark for sustainability in the hospitality industry.
Highly regarded as the world’s leading certification for sustainable and operation and management in the travel and tourism industry, recipients of Green Globe Certification are rigorously assessed across 44 criteria and over 380 compliance indicators.
“This recognition acknowledges and rewards our team’s dedication to upholding international sustainability standards by implementing responsible practices across all resort operations since opening our doors in March 2025,” said Cavaliere Giovanni Viterale, Cluster General Manager of Raffles Sentosa Singapore and Sofitel Singapore Sentosa.
“We look forward to continuing to work closely with our guests, colleagues and community to preserve Sentosa Island’s natural environment and heritage, and to create meaningful, long-term impact for the benefit of both visitors and locals,” he added.
Preservation of Sentosa’s natural landscape and heritage architecture
The design of Raffles Sentosa Singapore was conceived to seamlessly integrate with significant natural landscape features including two heritage ficus trees which are estimated to be between 100 and 150 years old. The trees have quickly become synonymous with the property’s architecture that blends indoor and outdoor spaces, and a showcase of the lush greenery and native species for which the island is renowned.
Conservation efforts have also been extended to the built environment, including the careful restoration of the original features of the Raffles Sentosa Spa building, a heritage landmark and former British military barracks which has previously received the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) Architectural Heritage Award.
Water conservation and waste reduction
The resort is committed to reducing water waste via a series of initiatives including 50% valve closure for its back-of-house water pressure and the property-wide installation of water-efficient fixtures wherever possible. In addition, resort restaurants serve Purezza water which reduces reliance upon bottled water by using a water filtration system; thus supporting a mangrove reforestation project in Indonesia. Furthermore, in-villa guest water bottles are reusable to minimise the use of single-use plastics.
The resort’s restaurants use fresh, seasonal produce grown in the thriving on-site edible garden which currently features more than 20 species of fruit trees and herbs. To reduce food waste, the resort uses Winnow machines to help monitor food waste, using the data gleaned to gain insights into guest preferences and refine menus accordingly. Additionally, Raffles Sentosa Singapore incorporates a zero-waste philosophy by repurposing ingredients such as prawn shells, beef, vegetables, and corn trimmings into stocks, soups and other dishes. At Royal China, the property’s refined Cantonese restaurant, this approach extends to the use of red snapper bones, lobster shells and wagyu trimmings to elevate flavourful stocks, soups and dim sum.
Inside guest villas, waste reduction initiatives include wooden key cards; laundry, shirt, shoe and tote bags crafted from reusable fabric; canvas bags for soiled linen in lieu of plastic; and the collection of used Nespresso capsules which are recycled by the supplier.
Furthermore, guests enjoy a paperless check-in and check-out process, and any essential printed collateral resort-wide uses only FSC-certified paper.
Curbing carbon emissions
To reduce carbon emissions, the property has incorporated an automatic air-conditioner compressor shut-off system whenever villa doors are left open for more than three minutes, as well as using fully electric buggies, providing charging stations for electric vehicles and showcasing solar-powered outdoor lighting throughout the resort. Raffles Sentosa Singapore’s thoughtful landscaping also contributes to emissions reduction by planting native species across more than 50% of the resort’s landscape.
