If New Year’s resolutions tend to fade by Australia Day, Air New Zealand is offering something far more durable: a boarding pass. The airline has opened 2026 with what it confidently describes as some of its lowest fares of the year, launching a nationwide New Year Sale running from 7 to 19 January 2026, unless the sharpest deals disappear sooner.

It is a bold way to start the year, and a timely one. With travel firmly back on the agenda and diaries already filling, the carrier’s sale spans its entire network, covering domestic New Zealand routes, Australia, the Pacific Islands, North America and Asia. In short, if there is a destination you have been meaning to get around to “one day”, Air New Zealand is suggesting that day should be in 2026.

Chief Commercial Officer Scott Wilkinson says the aim is simple: get people planning early and travelling with purpose.

“If you’ve been waiting for a sign to book flights to the destination you’ve been dreaming about, this is it! With every destination across our network on sale, we’re helping Kiwi customers kick off the year with a plan and a boarding pass,” Wilkinson said.

“Whether it’s a long-awaited reunion, a new adventure, or simply a well-earned break, we’re making it more affordable for people to get those trips in the diary and start the year on a positive note.”

The numbers, as ever, do the talking.

Domestically, one-way fares start from just $69, including popular routes such as Auckland to Gisborne, Napier and Tauranga, as well as Christchurch to Dunedin. Even the traditionally busy trunk routes are included, with Auckland to Wellington and Auckland to Christchurch from $79, and Auckland to Queenstown from $99.

Across the Tasman, Australians and New Zealanders alike can secure seat-only one-way fares from $215 between Auckland or Christchurch and Brisbane, $220 to the Gold Coast, and from $225 between Wellington or Christchurch and Sydney. Auckland to Sydney starts at $235, an invitation that will be hard for weekend travellers to ignore.

For those craving warmer waters, the Pacific Islands are squarely in focus. One-way fares begin at $228 to Nadi from Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch, $238 to Apia or Niue, and from $338 on the new Christchurch to Rarotonga route, an addition that will please South Island holidaymakers looking to bypass the Auckland shuffle.

Long-haul travellers are not left behind. North America fares start from $499 to Honolulu, $599 to Los Angeles, and $799 to New York. Asia, meanwhile, is firmly back on the map, with economy fares from $529 to Shanghai, $579 to Bali, and $599 to Hong Kong.

There is, of course, the usual fine print. Travel periods and conditions apply, and availability is limited. But the message is unmistakable: Air New Zealand is keen to convert post-holiday optimism into confirmed bookings.

In an era where uncertainty has become a constant companion, the airline’s New Year Sale leans into something refreshingly old-fashioned: planning, locking in value, and having something tangible to look forward to. For many travellers, that may be the most persuasive resolution of all.
