Australian travellers with an eye on 2026 would do well to sharpen their pencils now. In a move that rewards foresight and a fondness for the scenic route, Great Journeys New Zealand has unveiled an Early Bird sale offering 20 per cent off all loaded multi-day rail tours for the 2026–27 travel window.

Timed neatly for the Boxing Day lull when Australians traditionally turn their minds to holidays rather than leftovers, the offer runs from 26 December 2025 to 31 January 2026. It applies to departures between September 2026 and April 2027. Bookings are made online using the promo code EARLYBD27, a small string of letters that could unlock some very large landscapes.

This is not rail travel as a means to an end. These premium, multi-day journeys are carefully choreographed experiences, blending iconic train routes with curated accommodation, regional dining and immersive activities along the way. Alpine passes give way to coastal vistas; historic towns appear without the stress of a steering wheel or the tyranny of timetables. The planning, quite deliberately, has already been done.

And that, increasingly, is the point. As travel trends tilt towards slower, more meaningful journeys, rail is enjoying a renaissance. The train becomes both theatre and transport, an ever-changing window seat to New Zealand’s geography, while the destinations themselves arrive with context, not rush.

Great Journeys New Zealand executive Tracey Goodall says the appeal lies in the ease as much as the experience.
“Our multi-day tours give travellers the chance to slow down, soak in the scenery, and experience New Zealand in a way that’s effortless, stress-free, and unforgettable,” she says. “From the comfort of the train to the curated stops along the way, these tours allow travellers to tick off bucket-list experiences while truly enjoying the journey itself.”

Goodall says the Early Bird sale is designed for travellers who understand the value of planning ahead.
“The Early Bird sale is the perfect opportunity to plan ahead and secure your next adventure. There is nothing quite like seeing New Zealand through fresh eyes and new experiences.”

For Australian travellers in particular, the timing makes sense. Demand for premium, experience-led travel continues to rise, and popular departure dates rarely linger. Booking early not only delivers a tangible saving, but it also offers choice—the freedom to select preferred routes, seasons and travel companions before availability narrows.

There is also a quiet confidence in the product itself. Rail journeys suit New Zealand’s scale and scenery; they encourage connection rather than conquest. You do not race the landscape; you let it come to you.

Bookings under the Early Bird sale are now open. Full details and reservations are available at greatjourneysnz.com.
