It takes a certain boldness to combine two of life’s greatest indulgences, sun-drenched beaches and wild safari expeditions, into one seamless holiday. But boldness, after all, has always been the Club Med way. Now the French pioneer of all-inclusive holidays is doing precisely that, with a world-first resort that promises to marry the turquoise waves of South Africa’s Dolphin Coast with the raw power of the Big Five.
Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari, slated to open its doors in July 2026, is already making waves and not just in the surf. Sales will kick off in October 2025, and if the brand’s record is any measure, expect keen travellers to pounce early.
A first footprint in South Africa
Rachael Harding, CEO of Club Med East, South Asia and Pacific (ESAP), could barely hide her excitement:
“The launch of Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari marks an exciting first for our brand – our very first footprint in South Africa. This project not only celebrates the extraordinary beauty of KwaZulu-Natal but also introduces a one-of-a-kind combination of beach and safari experiences. It’s a truly unique offering that we believe will deeply appeal to our clients in ESAP and beyond, who are consistently seeking new and immersive travel experiences.”
For Club Med, a company whose red-hat “Gentils Organisateurs” (G.O.s) have long been synonymous with chic escapes from the Alps to Bali, the move south is more than just geographical expansion. It’s a statement that Africa’s tourism landscape is maturing and that travellers want more than a single flavour of luxury.
Dolphin Coast: where surf meets safari
Just 30 minutes from Durban’s King Shaka International Airport, the resort site covers 32 hectares of pristine terrain. Guests will find 411 accommodations, ranging from Superior and Deluxe rooms to the high-end Exclusive Collection Ilanga suites, 66 of which offer Champagne sunsets, which are practically compulsory.
South African architectural firm Craft of Architecture, along with Parisian interior stylists Mobius and MHNA, are designing a resort that whispers luxury without shouting it. Expect a strong Zulu aesthetic from materials to motifs infused into a palette as natural as the coastline.
The plan is for four pools, each with a personality of its own: a lively main pool for those who prefer noise with their cocktails, a family-friendly option, a Zen pool for adults who like their tranquillity unmarred, and an Exclusive Collection pool for those intent on keeping out the riff-raff.
Dining and festivity, the Club Med way
Food, naturally, is as central to Club Med as sunshine. Guests will graze at Oceana, an all-day affair of international cuisines, or savour local seafood at the Nguni Gourmet Club. Bars run the gamut: from the Injabulo Bar with its caffeine corner to the Dunes Beach Bar, where cocktails and surf culture collide.
And because no Club Med holiday would be complete without spectacle, evenings will deliver entertainment rooted in South African rhythms. Think beachside parties where the sea itself joins in the chorus.
Safari, but with flair
The safari side of the package is no token add-on. Guests will head to the Mpilo Safari Lodge, set in an 18,000-hectare reserve where lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and Cape buffalo roam free. Accommodation? Premium tented lodges, of course, because roughing it is best left to another generation. Families will enjoy specially tailored drives for little ones, while nights bring traditional Boma gatherings, barbecues and stories told under the stars.
This is where Club Med breaks ground. Never before has the brand fused its resort magic with an exclusive safari experience, promising a new thrill for jaded travellers who think they’ve seen it all.
Wellness, waves and whimsy
Wellness enthusiasts won’t be left wanting. A full spa centre will serve treatments and hammam rituals, while yoga sessions will take place under palapas designed for mindful breathing. Those after-action can embrace gravel biking through sugarcane fields, kayaking along the coast, padel, tennis, and even the flying trapeze.
And here’s a first: Club Med’s debut Surf School. On South Africa’s Dolphin Coast, children and adults will learn the art of the wave from professional instructors. The surfboard is a natural evolution for a brand that’s built empires on snow skis.
Children, meanwhile, will be spoiled for choice. From Baby Club Med (as young as four months) to teen-friendly Chill Pass programmes, every generation gets its slice of paradise.
A community partnership
Grand projects often face the accusation of being bubbles, untouched by the surrounding world. Not here. Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari represents an investment of over 2 billion rand (about €100 million), delivered in partnership with Collins Residential and a local investment consortium.
More than 800 direct and 1,500 indirect jobs are expected, with 1,200 construction workers already on site. Notably, the resort has teamed up with the NukaKamma Hospitality School, where over 100 young South Africans are training today with the promise of an international Club Med experience tomorrow. They’ll return home as seasoned hoteliers, enriching KwaZulu-Natal’s talent base for years.
Green at its core
Club Med’s Happy to Care programme will shape operations. The resort is chasing Green Globe certification and a 4-star Green Star rating from South Africa’s Green Building Council. Eco-friendly touches, such as solar car parks, water-saving systems, natural ventilation and green roofs, are being baked into the plan.
Plastic straws? Forget it. Under Club Med’s “Bye-Bye Plastics” initiative, they won’t darken the doors. Local farmers, brought into the supply chain through a partnership with NGO Agrisud, will see their produce on resort plates. For guests, that means fresher food. For communities, it means sustained growth.
A vision realised
The South African debut for Club Med isn’t just about another pin on the map. It’s about reshaping what an all-inclusive holiday can be. No longer must travellers choose between barefoot luxury by the beach or the heart-stopping thrill of safari. In 2026, they can have both — with cocktails shaken, sunsets guaranteed, and perhaps the roar of a lion in the distance.
Bookings open October 2025. Those eager to secure their patch of paradise are invited to visit Club Med or phone 1800 258 2633.
In tourism, there are launches. And then there are game-changers. This one, by all appearances, is firmly the latter.
