In a move that would make even old Neptune tip his trident in approval, Forbes Travel Guide (FTG)—that bastion of luxury benchmarking—is taking its first voyage downriver. Quite literally.

In a world-first for the cruise industry, FTG has announced it will launch an official Star Rating system for river cruises. This long-anticipated nod to the quietly booming world of slow travel by waterway marks the first time the independent global authority on luxury hospitality will dip its toes into the serene waters of river cruising.

Set to make its grand debut in 2027, FTG’s inaugural list of star-rated river cruises will accompany its annual rollcall of luxury hotels, restaurants, spas and ocean-going vessels across more than 100 countries.

And make no mistake—this is no half-baked ratings gimmick. These stars aren’t handed out like seasickness pills on a windy day. Each one is earned the hard way: through rigorous, anonymous inspections conducted by FTG’s famously discreet evaluators, who assess hundreds of standards with a magnifying glass—figuratively speaking, of course—on service, style and substance.

“River cruising has quickly become one of the most sought-after ways to explore the world in comfort and style,” said Amanda Frasier, President of Ratings for Forbes Travel Guide. “We’re seeing an exciting evolution in the category, with river cruise lines delivering elevated service and specialising in immersive itineraries and refined onboard experiences that appeal to today’s discerning traveller.”

And Frasier, the steady hand at the luxury helm, has a point. While ocean liners may grab the headlines with their floating skyscraper-style grandeur, river cruises have quietly crafted a more intimate, immersive and sophisticated niche—offering everything from sunrise yoga on the Mekong to wine-tasting along the Danube.

As for the inaugural roster, while FTG keeps final decisions close to its lifejacket for now, the riverways on the starry horizon include the Danube, Rhine, Nile, and Mekong. And don’t be surprised if brands like AmaWaterways, Uniworld, Avalon Waterways, Viking, Riverside Luxury Cruises, Scenic, Emerald, and the boutique adventurers at Aqua Expeditions find themselves in the spotlight—or starlight, instead.

Each cruise will be subjected to FTG’s classic standards of scrutiny, emphasising personalised service, luxury detailing, onboard wellness and guest experience. These inspections are incognito—no champagne handshakes or five-star favours here.

It’s worth remembering: no one can buy a Forbes star. There’s no commission, no old-school favour-swapping, and no gold-plated envelopes changing hands beneath the captain’s table.

FTG awards more than 2,000 luxury properties yearly with Five-Star, Four-Star, or Recommended status. Their following announcement—covering the world’s most exclusive hotels and ocean cruises—is slated for February 11, 2026, on forbestravelguide.com, just a year before the river cruise ratings drop anchor.

For river cruise operators, this is not merely a vanity accolade—it’s an invitation to step up, polish the silverware, and deliver the sort of hospitality that doesn’t just float—it soars.

As discerning guests continue to embrace a slower, richer luxury travel, the message is clear: calm waters now carry weight. And with Forbes on board, river cruising may finally get the glittering gold stars it deserves.
