Regarding walking tours in London, you may expect a tweed-clad historian reeling off Henry VIII anecdotes in Westminster. But this summer, the cobbled backstreets of the British capital are singing a new tune – one spiced with cardamom, coloured with calligraphy, and grounded in the lived experience of women worldwide.
In a stirring departure from the monocultural norm, the TUI Care Foundation, in partnership with the spirited team at Women in Travel CIC, has launched TUI Futureshapers London – a programme designed to put storytelling power directly in the hands of women who know a thing or two about cultural richness and resilience.
And what a tale they’re telling.
The Tour Guide Revolution Begins
Though London’s skyline may shimmer with modernity, its tourism sector – like many others – remains old-fashioned in one glaring respect: it’s still largely male-dominated. Enter Futureshapers: an initiative that arms women from diverse backgrounds with professional tour guide certification, business skills, and, most importantly, a megaphone to share their stories.
The programme, which unfurled its sash at the venerable Royal Society of Arts, offers immersive training in tour creation, customer engagement, marketing, storytelling, and the curious art of self-promotion – because as any veteran guide will tell you, it’s one thing to talk, quite another to be heard.
The women are taught how to lead a tour, build a business, invoice clients, market themselves, and run their affairs like seasoned entrepreneurs. If that sounds like hard yakka, you’d be right—but it’s already paying dividends.
Tales from Edgware to Damascus
The first batch of guides has wasted no time hitting the pavements. Amal Ahmed, for instance, is leading a Saudi cultural experience along Edgware Road – London’s famed “Little Arabia”. Think Arabic music, traditional hospitality, the scent of oud wafting through the air, and spontaneous dance interludes. You might need a second coffee if that doesn’t get your heart racing.
Meanwhile, Nadia Aburdene walks visitors through Syrian heritage in West London, inviting them into a world of Levantine art, spice-laden cuisine, and centuries-old customs. It’s not just a tour – it’s a journey across borders without checking your passport.
These aren’t dusty scripts lifted from a guidebook. They are deeply personal narratives – stories of migration, identity, memory and belonging – wrapped in the visual splendour of London’s multicultural precincts.
The Power of Perspective
Alexander Panczuk, Managing Director of the TUI Care Foundation, couldn’t be prouder.
“TUI Futureshapers London is about unlocking potential and giving diverse voices a platform. These women offer perspectives that allow travellers to experience London in a way that’s completely new,” he said, brimming with the kind of conviction we’d like to see more of in boardrooms.
Indeed, by platforming the women’s cultural identities, the tours enrich London’s tourism tapestry while giving the guides a firm economic footing – a financial foothold on a ladder long hoarded by the usual suspects.
From Dreams to Doors Open
The initiative owes much of its success to Women in Travel CIC, the brainchild of Alessandra Alonso, who’s made it her life’s mission to turn cultural diversity into opportunity.
“I believe in the power of these tours as a catalyst for a more inclusive world,” said Alonso. “We’re not just seeing the city; we’re celebrating it – in all its multicultural beauty, from the perfume of Saudi Arabia to the art of Damascus and the flavours of Ukraine.”
And it’s not just lip service. These tours are meticulously designed to be sustainable, ensuring guides don’t fall off the radar after the initial splash. The guides are equipped to thrive well beyond graduation through mentorship, continued collaboration with TUI experts like Klaudija Janzelj, and international marketing support.
Klaudija, who heads up City Experiences at TUI, added:
“What’s been created is a series of genuinely engaging and immersive tours that uncover a side of London most people never see. It’s what travellers are crying out for – connection, authenticity, and something that goes beyond Buckingham Palace.”
A Global Movement, Grounded in Heritage
TUI Futureshapers London is one chapter in a larger global tale. The broader TUI Futureshapers programme operates in Tunisia, Sweden, Portugal, Greece, Tanzania, and beyond, transforming social challenges into entrepreneurial tourism opportunities.
In this case, the challenges are twofold: empowering women and reshaping a traditionally narrow tourism narrative. The solution? Giving women the tools to become both the authors and the stars of their own stories.
And by all accounts, the audience is ready.
As London continues to reinvent itself – a city forever shifting between the ancient and the avant-garde – these women are carving out a new narrative, one cobblestone at a time.
A narrative that doesn’t just tell you where to go, but why it matters.
