QueenstownWalter’s Tavern has officially opened in Queenstown, bringing new energy just as the snow season kicks off across the Southern Alps.

Located on Ballarat Street in the centre of town, Walter’s is a modernised watering hole previously known as the Pig & Whistle pub. The reimagined and freshly renovated pub spans two levels and includes a lively ground-floor bar, relaxed upstairs dining and terrace, offering visitors a warm and welcoming spot to unwind after a day on the mountain.

“For travellers and our locals, it’s the kind of spot that feels easy to walk into – relaxed, familiar, and a great place to warm up after the mountain or catch up with friends over a good meal,” said Venue Manager Clementine Rivier.

Fireplaces, timber textures, and casual seating keep the atmosphere familiar, while soft lighting and refreshed finishes create a space that’s comfortable, without being overly polished. The downstairs bar features pool tables and large screens for live sport, while upstairs offers casual banquette seating – ideal for small groups, long lunches, or easy-going family dinners. Outside, the terrace is sheltered and fitted with its own fireplace, providing a year-round space for those seeking an afternoon drink or somewhere to settle in post-ski.Queenstown

The menu is focused on generous, approachable dishes that blend classic pub comfort with fresh New Zealand flavours. Dishes include Pork Belly Bites with chilli caramel and toasted sesame, South Island Smoked Venison BBQ Ribs with charred corn and ranch slaw, Fried Chicken with hot honey and pickles, Braised Lamb Shanks, plus lighter options such as Kingfish Sashimi Crudo, and classic Beer-Battered Fish and Chips with fries, house salad and tartare.

“The food is honest and hearty, with a modern skew,” said Rivier. “We wanted to keep the classics we know people loved and add a few new favourites too.”

Walter’s is open daily from 12pm until late, with weekly specials and entertainment including Happy Hour from 4–6pm Monday to Friday, Trivia on Tuesdays, $25 Parmys and Karaoke on Wednesdays, $22 Burgers on Thursdays, and live music every Friday and Saturday night.

For travellers heading to Queenstown this winter, Walter’s offers a new place to enjoy – a familiar-feeling local in a refreshed setting, just steps from the lakefront and the heart of town.
