Spread the love

Robert La Bua - Global Travel Connoisseur - LogoThe luxurious presence of The Chedi brings an air of sophistication to the small Swiss Alpine village of Andermatt, formerly a key trade junction between the north, south, east, and west of Europe.  Today, the trade routes may be different, but Andermatt remains well known as a highlight on the train route known as the Glacier Express, which links the glamorous ski resorts of St. Moritz and Zermatt.  Glamour can also be found at The Chedi, where the nature-inspired wood and stone interiors are impressive both in their design and their grandeur.

Spread over several buildings, the various rooms and suites of The Chedi display the understated elegance found in all GHM properties.  The fact that The Chedi Andermatt is set in a cold climate sets it apart from other properties in the company’s portfolio, making it a unique destination on several levels.  Conveniently located just across the street from the train station in the centre of Andermatt village, The Chedi is a logical focal point for social and sporting activities.  The hotel’s house car can transport guests to the nearby ski lifts in winter or hiking trails in summer, or to Andermatt’s concert hall, where big-name singers and musicians entertain village visitors with performances more typically found in major cities, here enjoyed in a comparable, world-class facility.

Guests at The Chedi Andermatt have an array of dining options to keep their palates entertained as well.  Called The Restaurant, the expansive, open spaces of the dining area, off the hotel’s lobby, are flanked by not one but two open kitchens: one preparing food in a Western style, the other in an Asian style.  The Restaurant’s unique menu offers selections prepared either way according to guest preferences.  A highlight of culinary experiences in Switzerland is the country’s excellent cheeses, which are served at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Locals and visitors alike love the cheeses of Switzerland, especially the exceptional mountain cheeses and other locally produced types that are rarely exported.  At The Chedi Andermatt, cheese is celebrated with gusto in The Restaurant’s cheese room, a pleasure palace of dairy delights where a wide range of cheeses, both Swiss and imported, are presented under individual glass domes in a beautiful display that encourages ordering the cheese plate after the main meal.  Those who do order it are escorted into the cheese room to make their choices upon recommendation of the knowledgeable cheese sommelier.  Elsewhere on the Chedi’s dining scene, the Asian element is more pronounced in The Japanese and The Japanese At Gütsch, the latter located above Andermatt at an elevation of 2400 metres.

Something is soothing about a fireplace in a hotel guestroom that enhances the feeling of cosiness.  Falling asleep to the warm glow of a fire seems to point the gods of slumber in the right direction for a restful night.  At The Chedi, where advanced technology is kept uncomplicated to simplify the guest experience, the gas fireplace is controlled, like everything else, electronically from a tablet.  The Chedi’s guestrooms are incredibly spacious and well-appointed, creating a chalet experience that suits the location; the hotel’s top suites are both enormous and exceedingly stylish.

Despite its seemingly isolated setting, Andermatt is easily reached by train, an ideal mode of transport in a country that prides itself on its extensive rail network.  The Swiss Travel Pass allows for unlimited travel in First or Second Class, with durations ranging from 3 to 15 days.  An excellent way for busy travellers to streamline the logistics of their itineraries, the Swiss Travel Pass not only eliminates the need to purchase a ticket for every rail journey but also includes travel on urban transport networks in cities across the country and entry into more than 500 museums.  The Swiss Travel Pass is available at Swiss Tourism offices worldwide.
