Psychological barriers to climbing.
Get over it, as you must.
FIRST THINGS FIRST
They are the first steps in the long, often tortuous journey to finding new clients, team members, suppliers, and associates.
The byways are often littered with the remnants of failed (frequently repeated) attempts to capture new opportunities.
It’s no wonder there is an air of tentativeness or even apprehension. Too often, that is reason enough to abandon growth and development initiatives.
The psychology of apprehension is inclined to exaggerate the perceived or real barriers, filters and impediments on the path to success.
Empirical evidence or substantive facts typically do not support the fear of failure. Nonetheless, it is a powerful force, not necessarily for the good.
We must all pick ourselves up and try, try again. It is a seasoned mantra.
Apprehension, fear, anxiety, and stress tend to increase and become more widespread and conspicuous as individuals age. Tolerance of each declines. Decision-making at large becomes more challenging and taxing. Avoiding decisions, and thus not confronting the respective psychological barriers and states, typically becomes more evident and expected. The influence of such is greatest before the fact.
Interestingly, it is not significant once the decision is made to make a decision and begin the action process. Many perceived barriers, filters and impediments wane, disappear or are largely sidelined.
What then is the issue? It is the psychology of life. Repeated exposure to compromise, sub-optimal performance and failure conditions the mind. The (prospective) fear often has greater power and influence than the experience of it.
SO, WHAT NEXT
“Get on with it”, “get over it”, and “put it behind you” are sage advice, particularly within the construct of self-talk. Psychological barriers are inclined to be personal or the product of groupthink.
Therefore, don’t buy into this omnipotent force. Accept its presence and then move on.
It is often what stands between you, clients, success and fulfilment.
What’s it all about? Thought … I think.
