Kerala Tourism has added new momentum to its high-range tourism initiatives with the launch of a state-of-the-art eco-lodge and the renovation of a heritage guesthouse in Peerumedu, Idukki. These developments come as the district registers the highest increase in foreign tourist arrivals among Kerala’s 14 districts in the post-pandemic period, reaffirming its status as a vital contributor to the state’s tourism growth.
Shri. P. A. Mohamed Riyas, Minister, Kerala Tourism, inaugurated the facilities and noted Idukki’s evolution into a ‘golden goose’ of Kerala Tourism. Highlighting the district’s blend of scenic beauty, modern infrastructure, and accessibility, he emphasized Idukki’s emergence as a preferred destination for both domestic and international travellers.
The newly inaugurated eco-lodge, developed under the Swadesh Darshan scheme, comprises two blocks with 12 rooms, a kitchen, and a dining hall, built entirely using teakwood. The Rs.5.05 crore facility is complemented by an additional Rs.1.38 crore allocated for ancillary developments such as parking, pathways, rainwater harvesting, biogas plant, and landscape improvements. The adjoining heritage guesthouse also underwent a comprehensive renovation at a cost of Rs.1.85 crore, with another Rs.1.79 crore earmarked for operational enhancements, including upgraded amenities and electrification.
Minister Riyas also announced plans for a MICE Tourism Conclave in Kochi and a Wellness Tourism Conclave in Kozhikode. Additionally, Kerala is advancing a ‘Look East’ policy to attract tourists from East Asia. As part of this initiative, the state will host influencers and travel agents from countries like China, Japan, Malaysia, and Indonesia in collaboration with Malaysian Airlines. Destinations such as Idukki and Wayanad are set to benefit significantly from this strategic shift.
Peerumedu, historically a royal retreat, is being positioned as a hub for eco and farm tourism. The new developments are expected to further enhance its appeal by linking surrounding attractions like Panchalimedu, Vagamon, Uluppuni, and Sathram through a well-planned tourism circuit.
The function was attended by local leaders, tourism officials, and civic representatives, including Smt. Sikha Surendran, Director, Kerala Tourism and District Panchayat President Shri Rarichan Neeranakunnel.
