In an extraordinary comeback story, Kerala’s tourism sector has reached unprecedented heights, drawing a record-breaking 2.22 crore visitors in 2024—a remarkable 21% surge compared to pre-pandemic levels. Kerala’s Minister of Tourism, Shri, officially revealed the vibrant figures. P. A. Mohamed Riyas underscores Kerala’s unwavering appeal and the success of innovative strategies designed to rejuvenate and expand the state’s tourism footprint.
Minister Riyas enthusiastically shared with the State Assembly that this achievement not only reinforces Kerala’s global standing but also signifies the effectiveness of the state’s meticulous planning and execution of sustainable tourism initiatives. He stated, “Kerala’s unique ability to blend tradition with innovation has attracted global attention, and this record-breaking milestone speaks volumes about our enduring appeal.”
Central to the future expansion of Kerala’s tourism offerings is the ambitious K-Homes project, recently introduced in the 2025-26 state budget. Targeting popular destinations like Kovalam, Kumarakom, Munnar, and Fort Kochi, K-Homes creatively utilizes vacant residential properties to provide culturally immersive tourist stays. Developing an intuitive online booking platform will further streamline reservations, complement Kerala’s established luxury accommodations and enhance the hospitality experience.
Building on the state’s dedication to gender inclusivity, the Responsible Tourism Mission Society has successfully united 17,631 women entrepreneurs under one innovative platform. From homestay operators to transport providers and tour coordinators, this initiative amplifies women’s roles in tourism. Highlighting this achievement internationally, Kerala recently showcased its women-centric tourism model at the prestigious Global Women Conference on Gender Inclusive and Responsible Tourism held in picturesque Munnar.
Innovation through digital transformation is another pillar of Kerala’s strategic tourism revival. A landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Kerala Tourism and Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) ensures the integration of advanced digital technologies. This strategic alliance promises real-time destination updates, enhanced visitor experiences, and increased accessibility to information, further boosting Kerala’s global competitiveness.
Moreover, Kerala’s innovative Destination Challenge project has successfully identified and promoted 40 lesser-known attractions in collaboration with Local Self-Government Institutions. Capitalizing on the rising “Destination Dupe” trend—travellers choosing less crowded, cost-effective alternatives—these hidden gems offer uniquely authentic and memorable travel experiences.
Experiential tourism remains central to Kerala’s promotional strategy. Local stakeholders and Tourism Clubs within academic institutions are receiving specialized training to enhance destination branding and maintenance. Kerala Tourism introduced multilingual guide training for students to support this initiative further, significantly enriching visitor interactions. Additionally, Local Youth Tourism Clubs now unite local drivers and hospitality providers, fostering community-driven tourism environments that resonate deeply with visitors seeking authentic engagement.
Farm tourism recognized as an emerging powerhouse within Kerala’s tourism economy, has seen robust growth. The Responsible Tourism Mission Society has successfully trained 952 farm tourism operators, 452 of whom have already achieved substantial success, and over 100 are prominently featured on the official Responsible Tourism Mission website. This initiative supports rural agritourism and appeals directly to tourists craving genuine rural experiences.
In heritage tourism, Kerala proactively engages visitors through organized heritage walks involving students and local communities. These guided tours vividly bring Kerala’s rich cultural and historical heritage to life, offering tourists an immersive understanding of the region’s storied past and vibrant traditions.
Minister Riyas emphasized, “These multifaceted initiatives are not merely enhancing our tourism profile—they are actively enriching the lives of our local communities, preserving our environment, and establishing Kerala as an unmatched experiential destination.”
Kerala’s dynamic blend of innovation, sustainability, community engagement, and cultural preservation has firmly established the state as a premier global travel destination. With a clear vision and determined execution, Kerala Tourism is set to sustain its record-breaking momentum and chart new growth territories, offering unmatched travel experiences worldwide.
