Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ HANSEATIC inspiration has successfully concluded an extraordinary 32-day semi-circumnavigation of Antarctica, a voyage that retraced the paths of legendary explorers while offering passengers an unprecedented adventure. This epic expedition, spanning from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Christchurch, New Zealand, from January 28 to March 2, 2025, showcased the stark beauty and untamed wilderness of the White Continent in a way few have ever experienced.
The expedition started with an exceptionally calm crossing of the Drake Passage, allowing guests to ease into their once-in-a-lifetime journey. Upon arrival at the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula, passengers were greeted with breathtaking glaciers, towering icebergs, and extraordinary wildlife encounters, including penguins, seals, and whales in their natural habitat.
Among the voyage’s many highlights was a rare landing at Cape Bird, one of the few locations where visitors can witness Adélie penguins thriving in the extreme Antarctic conditions. The expedition then pressed further into the ice-laden waters of the Ross Sea, a region rich in history and home to the legendary Shackleton’s Hut. The visit, coinciding with Sir Ernest Shackleton’s birthday, was an emotional and historic moment for all on board, offering a glimpse into the challenges faced by early explorers.
Another extraordinary sighting was the elusive Emperor Penguins, standing proudly on the frozen expanse of the Ross Sea. Favourable weather conditions made these encounters even more memorable, allowing guests to absorb Antarctica’s raw and untouched grandeur fully.
After navigating the icy frontiers and retracing the steps of polar pioneers, HANSEATIC Inspiration made its final stop in Christchurch, New Zealand, on March 2, 2025, bringing the awe-inspiring journey to an unforgettable close.
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has announced its next Antarctic semi-circumnavigation for those who missed this legendary expedition in 2027. This extraordinary voyage will be undertaken by HANSEATIC spirit, departing from Ushuaia on February 1, 2027, and arriving in Christchurch on March 5, 2027.
